Research Assistant Professor/Scientist
Joint position between the Dept. Civil and Env. Eng. and Earth Sci. at University of Notre Dame and the Environmental Science Division (EVS) at Argonne National Laboratory
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Some achievements:1) Developed OceanMesh2D (second author published in GMD, see link to GitHub below), an automatic unstructured mesh generating toolbox implemented in MATLAB geared towards creating highly multiscale ocean meshes that range from local to global in scale. 2) Integrated my ADCIRC model (coded in FORTRAN) developments into release version through GitHub and was nominated for “ADCIRC Man-of-the-year” at the 2018 ADCIRC User’s Group Meeting.3) Contracts awarded during my tenure from the following sponsors: NOAA, FM Global Insurance, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.Projects:1) Coupled ice, tide, wind-wave, and storm surge modeling in Western Alaska Sep 2018 - Present- Analysed Western Alaska storm driven surge and the effect of ice coverage (under review at Ocean Modelling).- Personally provided on-demand surge forecasts during Feb and Mar 2019 to National Weather Service Alaska Regional Forecast Offices.2) U.S. IOOS Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed - Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands Sep 2017 - Aug 2018- Coupled density stratification into a high-resolution 2D ADCIRC model to improve the simulation of coastal water levels across the frequency spectrum (12-min to 1-yr periods) (first-author published in JGR: Oceans).- Comprehensively analysed Hurricane Irma and Maria storm surge and waves using ADCIRC and SWAN (co-author published in JGR: Oceans).3) Tides and Storm Surge in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea May 2016 - Jan 2018- Conducted a rigorous sensitivity assessment of large-scale tidal modeling in the Indian and Western Pacific Oceans to internal dissipation, bathymetry, and ocean boundary conditions (first author published in Ocean Modelling).
Research Assistant
• My numerical model was a foundational component of a $1.45 million Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority Project (August 2015 - Present) under which it has been further developed.• I took part in the project until March 2016 where I collaborated with experts from Hydro-soft Technology Institute Co., Ltd.
Graduate Student
• I developed a 2D-3D two-way coupled multiscale numerical model to simulate tsunamis from their source to the coastal zone to enable a detailed analysis of the impact on coastal and overland structures.• I validated my model and coupling scheme for solitary wave shoaling and breaking on a plane beach slope as detailed in my first-author publication in Coastal Engineering.• I used my model to investigate the 3D hydrodynamics of a tsunami around an offshore tsunami bay breakwater while simultaneously modeling large-scale propagation and inundation, as detailed in my first-author publication in Coastal Engineering Journal.• I advised master’s students using my developed numerical model which resulted in four peer-reviewed publications in Japanese civil engineering journals.See links to publications in summary.
