Software Engineer (Aka Developer & Integrator)
Member of Enterprise Content Management's Digital Delivery team (e.g. E-Mail, SMS, & Push notifications).Previously I was part of a sister team, Authoring, where Member Operational Communications (MOC) staff craft the templates for all outbound Customer Communication Management (CCM).
Software Developer
Member of the Repose team that develops the open source reverse proxy. We utilize the Scrum agile framework and everyone leads/participates in the ceremonies (daily stand ups, story grooming, retrospectives and sprint planning). I mentor junior members of the team including interns on software best practices and career advancement.Repose can be configured as either a Service Mesh or an API Gateway and is typically a little of both. It was originally written in Java with Groovy unit tests and built using Maven. At the time I joined the team, new development was in Scala with unit tests in Scala Test. We have also migrated the build to Gradle and have added a Groovy/Spock Functional Integration Test suite to ensure interoperability of the different Servlet Filters. The software is published as a WAR so it can be utilized in many JEE containers and is also published as standalone RPM/DEB packages utilizing the Jetty container. These packages are also used to publish Docker container images. The documentation is kept as part of the source tree and is automatically published to GitHub pages as part of each release. Each step of the automated Jenkins release process tests the artifacts before publishing them to the appropriate repository including running a smoke test on the Docker images. We also developed an automated performance test harness that provides a check for regression issues that may pass unit and functional tests, but end up being less performant.Additionally as a team we maintain our own build infrastructure (e.g. Jenkins, Sonar), performance framework (e.g. Graphana, InfluxDB), and feedback system (e.g. Mongo) using a mix of Puppet and Ansible.http://www.OpenRepose.org
Software Engineer
Software Lead for the development and maintenance of Iridium Based Friendly Force Tracking (IB-FFT) and In-Transit Visibility (ITV) solutions.Designed, installed, and maintain the updated development network used by the Global Tracking Solutions team. The network continued to support the developers and provide a program/project management portal with minimal downtime during the transition. The portal keeps stakeholders apprised of the development team’s current status and provides a flexible role based environment for tracking the status of Bug/Issue reports and Enhancement/Feature requests. The portal uses a workflow that is customized to meet the needs of each individual project.

Sr. Systems Engineer
Performed maintenance activities to the PECOS Message Specification in order to support several new and emerging technologies while they were being developed. Some of the supported messages required in-depth discussions with device engineers to acquire the subtle nuances of each system as each was implemented in total isolation from the others.Participated in the requirements definition and subsequent verification/validation testing efforts to bring these and other new devices up to the expectations of the PECOS Message Specification.Software Lead for the development and maintenance of Iridium Based Blue Force Tracking (IB-BFT) devices while continuing to move the Global Tracking Solutions team to be poised for CMMI certification.Updated the existing Configuration Management processes from using Concurrent Version System and Apache's Ant to using Git and Maven. These new technologies promoted reuse between projects and ensured the use of the appropriate library versions while maintaining a repeatable build system.
Systems Engineer
Coordinated with customers and other contractors to design and develop a common message structure that could utilize the Iridium Satellite Communications Network to its fullest. The structure was aimed at providing similar functionality to the Multi-Media extension of the Short Message System (SMS). This effort culminated in the PECOS Message Structure Interface Control Document (ICD).Designed and developed the upgrades for the Global Messenger software that was necessitated by obsolescence of the compilers being used to maintain the project. The project was moved to C#.NET and updates were made to allow the application to operate on emerging platforms like the Talon LITE.Designed and developed several upgrades and modifications to the Trakker 9000 firmware. The upgrades included support for updated Iridium Subscriber Units (ISU) and adding the Serial Bridge functionality for the Warrior Reach program as well as making it compatible with the PECOS Message Structure.Ported the core Trakker algorithms to the Java language from Dynamic C, a non-standard proprietary dialect of C. The new implementation decoupled the User Interface from the underlying algorithm allowing it to be utilized by both graphical and command line applications. Assisted in the deployment of several Talon Reach solution suites including the 109th NYANG. This particular suite was utilized to send data to redundant Talon Reach Servers at the US Polar Operations Center to record the commemorative 50th Anniversary flight of Admiral Byrd's famous polar mission.Implemented a version and build management process for all of the software developed and maintained under the Global Tracking Solutions team. This process consisted of taking many previously unmanaged build systems and bringing them under a single repeatable system using the Concurrent Version System and Apache's Ant.
Systems Engineer
Designed and developed updates and modifications to the Talon Reach architecture. This architecture is based on the Iridium Satellite Communications LLC unique 24/7 voice and data capabilities with global coverage. The updates included porting the Global Messenger software from the unsupported eVC language to the highly maintainable C# language, updating the Trakker 9000/9001 firmware to support new hardware modifications and user requirements, and adding interfacing support for the TR Server to allow it to display information on the FalconView mapping software.Designed and Developed the reporting sub-system of the MedFACTS application which assisted the Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA) in better meeting the Joint Commission Accredited Healthcare Organization (JCAHO) standards Air Force wide. The system was developed with Jasper Reports and produced ad-hoc reports from several disparate systems both in printed and electronic forms that remained compatible with existing formats.Performed extensive troubleshooting and analysis of the existing architecture used by the Air Force Surgeon General's web development team to host applications used by the DoD medical community. After the analysis was complete, the procurement of needed upgrades was completed, installed, and brought online. This allowed for an easy transition from a standalone public facing server to an integrated part of the USAF portal enclave.
Systems Analyst
Performed requirements analysis and prototyping for a remote viewing capability based on web enabled cameras. The cameras were linked on an isolated network and employed parabolic mirror technology to enable 360° viewing of the surrounding area. The completed system allowed security personnel to perform a virtual walk through of a remote facility.
Software Engineer
Designed and Developed the upgrade of the Conventional Flagging Process and Selectively Improved Flagging Technique (SIFT) software utilized by the 453rd Electronic Warfare Flight (EWF). We converted a batch driven process into a data driven process in order to provide more timely analysis. The original application was an unmanageable set of shell scripts. These were turned into a distributed and scalable system utilizing Jini, a Remote Method Invocation (RMI) framework for Java, to create a parallel processing collective. This allowed for any hardware that was currently being under utilized, to be dynamically brought into the fold even if for only a single stage of the processing. The final product integrated several previously undocumented complex scientific algorithms with an existing Oracle DB.
Software Engineer
Performed troubleshooting and updates to an FDA approved 100% Pure Java application. The updates included making the software compatible with even more disparate pieces of peripheral hardware and developing a single-click installation routine.
Communications Computer Systems Programmer
Software Developer on a Quick Reaction Capability (QRC) team that designed, developed, installed, and maintained Ka, S, and UHF band satellite communication systems for voice, video, and data.Performed system integration with real-time asynchronous serial communications using the Communications Standard Extension of the Java2 Platform.Converted legacy non-Y2K compliant Fortran applications and CGI scripts into Java servlets in support of geographically separated customers.
Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist
Loaded and unloaded special and conventional air-munitions on F-16 aircraft.Performed periodic inspections, functional/operational checks, unscheduled maintenance, fault isolation, and electrical/mechanical repair of aircraft weapons release/gun systems.Operated flightline support equipment including electrical generators and bomb lift trucks.Participated in the test and evaluation of new and prototype weapons systems.
