Pierre’s Costumes is one of the world’s oldest and largest full-service costume companies, located in the heart of Old City Philadelphia. Pierre's designs, creates, & rents mascots and costumes for theatre, TV, film, corporate, school, commercial, documentary, non-profit and many other types of professional clients.Our stock of rental costumes is well over a million pieces. We continue to maintain a full-range professional costume house, designing and manufacturing on the premises with our traditional tailoring and advanced crafting techniques.Pierre’s Costumes is the culmination of Miller Costumier, Irvin Stern’s Carousel Costumes and Uniforms by Pierre among several others.Miller Costumier, owned by Laura Miller, was established in 1876 after she retired from her stage career. Mrs. Miller was the first woman to own and operate a costume company in the United States. She was a member of high society, with her “comings and goings” being reported on the society pages, all while being an acting member of multiple theatre troupes. Her husband J. Horace Miller was nationally known for starring opposite of Julia Marlowe.Irvin Stern’s Carousel Costumes was established in 1900. Irvin Stern was a preeminent tailor for Austria’s Emperor Franz Joseph before immigrating to the United States. His first project after emigrating was to tailor for President William McKinley during the Spanish- American War. He started out renting formal wear, before he added an extensive stock of costumes.Uniforms by Pierre began in the 1930’s when Nathan Stomel, struck out on his own after training under his father at Stomel Clothing Company, a men’s tailor shop. He began with manufacturing of civilian and medical uniforms. During WWII he incorporated military uniforms into his business. In the 1940’s, he then transitioned to Pierre’s Uniforms and Costumes due to customer demand.

The Highlands Mansion and Gardens is a 59-acre historic site with a late 18th-century Georgian mansion and a two-acre formal garden. Surrounded by massive stone walls, the gardens offer a beautiful example of early 20th-century estate gardening with an unusual blend of horticulture and architecture. The site features nine outbuildings, including a bank barn, springhouse, greenhouse, smokehouse, and Gothic Revival gardener's cottage. The Highlands' 2 acre formal garden was first created in the 1840's by George Sheaff. By the 1920's Caroline Sinkler was using the Sheaff architectural features to create a dramatic setting. The garden is spectacular May through October with many different flowers blooming. The Highlands is recreating the spirit of the Sinkler garden based on letters, photographs and the survey that Caroline Sinkler commissioned in 1917. This restoration is a multi-phase, multi-year project. The grounds are open from dawn to dusk year round.in 2023, The Highlands Historical Society, after extensive negotiations, purchased 51 acres of land for $13.3 million. The 51 acres has been subdivided into four separate lots, consisting of three 10+ acre lots totaling 32 acres and one 19-acre lot. All of these lots are subject to protection and conservation enacted by the Pennsylvania Open Space Act. The 19-acre lot will be retained by the Highlands and added to its 40-acre estate for a total of 59 acres of permanently preserved green space. It is subject to an easement held by the Township preventing any development, and providing for unrestricted public access.The space is contiguous with both the Highlands estate and Wissahickon Trails’ Willow Lake Farm and its extensive trail network. This will create a 170-acre privately-owned green space and public park extending from Sheaff Lane to Broad Axe.https://www.highlandshistorical.org

The Open Space Committee is appointed by the Board of Supervisors to provide advice to the township Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation, Environmental Advisory Board and the Board of Supervisors on matters regarding the acquisition, protection, conservation, management, promotion and use of open land property located within the township.
