Founded in 2003, and Incorporated in August 2006, The Wall Street Wizards Academy (WSWA) is a 501c3 financial literacy and investment education non-profit for youth and young adults. The primary aim of the program is to provide youth and young adults with culturally relevant curricula and career exposure experiences that instill an understanding of: (1) personal money management techniques related to establishing good credit, savings, investment and wealth accumulation, (2) professional career opportunities that exist in the finance sector, and (3) preparation to make what we call “adult level” financial decisions. The E3 Innovation Initiative was dedicated to pursuing a social return on investment by educating university students of color in the fields of private equity and venture capital through real world experience as “E3 Student Associates” at a private equity fund called the E3 Innovation Fund. This initiative, modeled after the University Venture Fund in Salt Lake City, Utah (http://www.uventurefund.com), fostered increased diversity in private equity, venture capital, finance, technology, business and entrepreneurship.The E3 Innovation Fund was positioned as a “dual objective/double bottom line” community development venture capital fund. It targeted private, market rate financial returns for investors (LPs). The Fund invested in innovative, technology-oriented businesses led by women or minorities (underrepresented entrepreneurs), companies led by strong management teams with track records of success, where the entrepreneur had already invested time and money to start the business.The E3 Innovation Fund provided growth and expansion capital, and capital for acquisitions,buyouts or recapitalizations. The E3 Innovation Initiative was fully sustainable because it (i) relied primarily on a pipeline of students from the Wall Street Wizards program to recruit E3 Student Associates and (ii) focused on maintaining market rate returns throughout the life of the Fund.

Our mandate was to develop a "double bottom line" venture fund that would provide market rate returns for our investors (LPs) while creating jobs by investing in greater Bay Area businesses that are committed to economic development in the communities where they serve.
