My career in B2B media has led me from media analysis (well, press cutting and summary writing), through every stage of magazine production, to a highly specialised beat as a writer on a successful international niche magazine, and then to editing that magazine and its associated titles. My written work is clear, compelling, and thought provoking. I have taken a lead in developing editorial policies focussed on the interests of business owners and purchasers in my sector. These skills have ensured that the established title on which I work has strengthened its position in relation to its competitors. I have developed close, but impartial, relationships with leading trade associations, senior industry figures, regulators, analysts, and the broader business media. I would like to build on my skills as an analyst, communicator and editorial manager by helping to build a specialist media product with clear aims in print and online, and the potential for the development of an active community of readers, contributors and advertisers.I am also interested in providing public relations services to a forward-looking business, or in assisting in the communications and lobbying strategy of an active and engaged industry association.

I oversaw the merger of two related titles, OCH and Hoist. This allowed us to rationalise scheduling and resources. One was six issues a year, delivered to the US, and the other ten issues a year, covering the same topics in the rest of the world. Switching to 12 monthly titles streamlined delivery, while better serving readers and advertisers. In 2017, I launched a new magazine, Dockside Lift & Move. By focussing on port equipment and related services, we reached an underserved audience of purchasers and specifiers with a dedicated magazine. The title performed well for 18 monthsI am the face of the titles I edit, working alongside a title editor on Hoist, and have built a strong reputation for my publications. I have developed unparalleled access to leading individuals, companies and associations in my sector. I commission compelling copy, using contributors from a range of backgrounds. I am sought out as a provider of expert analysis. Show less

Content ManagerSpg Media 2003 - 2005Very similar to the editorial assistant's job. I was responsible for all provision of editorial on the title. Here, I managed relationships with advertorial providers, solicited unpaid content from industry experts, and wrote the occasional proper article. On the way I developed an understanding of advertiser-funded and controlled-circulation publications, re-launched a magazine, and developed a format (or,at least, a witty title) that SPG and its successor companies continue to use. -
Assistant EditorFinancial Publishing International 2001 - 2003London, United KingdomThis job, with a group of finance industry magazines, was on Fleet Street. Along with the Dandy (a children's comic), it was probably one of the last regular publishing houses based there. I handled relationships with advertorial writers, subbed journalists' copy, assisted with layout and production, and supported the group editor. I struggle to look back on a single article with pride, but it added to my skills as a writer and gave me a start-to-finish understanding of magazine production.

Summary WriterPrecise Media 1999 - 2001London, United KingdomVery similar to the reader job, but here I focussed on four industry sectors (travel, pharmaceutical, and a couple more I can't remember). Working nights, I read every British and Irish newspaper before 6am, and wrote a 25 word summary of every sector relevant story. These were then delivered to execs and PRs as an easy to read briefing at the start of their working day. It gave me a detailed understanding of business, and the ability to convey business news simply and clearly.

Reader/Press ClipperPrecise Media 1996 - 1999I think the development of the internet may have made this job obsolete. It was a good introduction to B2B though. I memorised 3,000 or so company names and industry key words, over a score of industry sectors, and read a dozen or so publications a day, extracting mentions and relevant stories. These were then cut out and faxed to C-level execs and PRs to let them know how their company/client and industry was doing.
