As Chief Information Security Officer, I am responsible for protecting and securing the University’s information and information systems as well as leading the creation, maturation, and application of UNCW’s security program. The complexity of this position requires a leadership approach that is engaging, imaginative, and collaborative, with the ability to work with other leaders to strategically align the information security program to the objectives and needs of the University.Notable accomplishments• Complete rework of all IT policies to align with ISO 27002 and to restructure our executive commitment to security and data governance• Revised or created multiple administrative level security documents supporting policy changes including security strategy, data handling, CSIRP, standards, and operating procedures• Directly or indirectly responsible for the procurement and deployment of logical safeguards to mitigate assessed risks, including web and next generation firewalls, identity and access management controls, monitoring and alerting software, and enterprise vulnerability management services• Created and implemented a custom targeted IT security awareness training within our learning management system• Implemented a comprehensive and successful anti-phishing campaign and technical project• Provisioned all essential security functions to cloud services to support disaster recovery objectives and proactively anticipate future University growth and needs• Developed an internship program focused on essential security experience through people, process, and technology projects• Justified, funded, designed, staffed, deployed, and continue to grow and develop UNCW’s first security operation center, already handling thousands of investigations a month

In response to a growing and urgent need for security management and in alignment with new leadership, I transitioned into a leadership role to manage and mature the security department, strategy, and posture. To meet these demands I created collaborative internal projects and campus engagements to support sustainable and effective information security initiatives, including: • Justified and oversaw the realignment of security responsibilities and the transition of non-security focused duties to the proper departments while maintaining separation of duties and minimizing conflicts of interest• Managed budget requests including staff development and favorable vendor negotiations• Conducted assessments and addressed gaps and risk for compliance-based processes and controls including those relating to FERPA, DMCA, and ISO 27002• Collaborated with IT Compliance to complete internal and state audit requirements and reports• Performed operational assessments with subject matter experts to produce effective configurations and operating procedures on multiple security tools, including our IPS/IDS, endpoint detection and response, vulnerability management, penetration testing, DNS security filtering, log storage and retention, and security incident and event management systems• Created custom application to process open-source intelligence into actionable early warning data for malicious attacks in response to shortcomings in existing services• Championed security awareness within the greater UNCW community through presentations including Employee Orientations, student engagements, small to medium business panel discussions, and an executive level Cyber Security Table-Top Training Exercise• Conducted incident detection/analysis, containment, eradication and prevention campus-wide• Created and nurtured relationships with University leadership to leverage opportunities and partnerships in building a culture of information security throughout the campus community
