Gainesville, Florida Area

The New York Times Co. moved its editing center operation from New York to Gainesville in 2010. I was there through two U.S. elections, the Arab Spring uprisings, eleventh-hour debt negotiations and many other breaking news events. I worked primarily in the editing center's News Service division — the Times' wire service — with a team of nine others to edit, condense and update Times stories for media outlets around the world. I also copy-edited TimesDigest, a printed, daily condensed version of the Times, and packaged stories for use in international feature publications.

Springfield, Massachusetts Area

My work as an editor in Springfield made me want to be a journalist and not just a writer. I had a chance to connect with a community and learn that nothing is boring if you bother to talk to people.With a staff of four, I co-ran four monthly targeted-demographic publications and assisted in producing a Spanish-language weekly. In 2008, I helped lead efforts to convert one of those publications from print to online, and we used the opportunity to report on a variety of subjects and publish a podcast and other multimedia.
