RC's primary function during disaster/incident events is to provide assistance, guidance and technical support to County Emergency Management (EM) officials while ensuring the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) Chief is provided timely notification of operational status and anticipated resource request that the impacted area may have. Each event within the state creates a set of unique circumstance – and thus a unique response.Region 2 covers Jackson, Calhoun, Gulf, Gadsden, Leon, Liberty, Franklin, Wakulla and Jefferson counties in the State of Florida.

I worked as an Operations (Ops) Officer in the State Watch Office (SWO), a 24-hour information collection, dissemination and initial operations center for all event driven emergencies that are impacting, or may impact the State of Florida. The SWO also serves as the initial point of contact for local jurisdictions or agencies requesting state assistance for situations beyond their response capabilities. The primary mission of the Ops Officer in SWO is to collect, analyze and act on incoming data and provide warning to appropriate state and local agencies and individuals of impending danger or existing hazardous situations. The Ops Officer is responsible for providing notifications and warning to county dispatch centers, the State Emergency Response Team (SERT), nuclear power plants, and federal agencies regarding emergency situations and relaying of official requests for outside assistance.

Operations Specialist (OS) maintain the Combat Information Center (CIC), which consists of strategic and tactical information. Function as plotters, radio-telephone and Command and Control sound-powered telephone talkers. Operate surveillance and altitude radars' Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), and associated equipment. Serve as watch supervisors and section leaders; interpret and evaluate presentations and tactical situations and make recommendations to supervisors during watch conditions. The job of an OS can be very intense and stressful while the ship is underway. An OS needs to be able to think quickly, drawing on a large reserve of tactical and procedural knowledge and be able to make calculations on the fly in the fast-paced and information-saturated environment of naval combat operations at sea.
