The legacy and innovation of the Institute for Development and Commercialization of Advanced Sensor Technologies (IDCAST) lives on through the IDCAST Chemical Sensor Division. IDCAST was created by the State of Ohio's 3rd Frontier Wright Centers of Innovation program in 2008. Although the State funding ended years ago, the instrumentation still exists under my supervision and is co-located with TCM.
I was responsible for writing proposals for Government R&D funding, serving as principle investigator on awarded contracts, and leadership/management duties on awarded contracts. Tech areas included analytical chemistry, "smart" systems, sensor systems, and augmented reality. My win total was just south of $8M during my time at ARCTOS (formerly Universal Technology Corporation = UTC).

VGC was an adventure that led to many great things. As we reduced groundwater monitoring by remote/autonomous gas chromatography to practice we formed Targeted Compound Monitoring to commercialize environmental monitoring as a service. Eventually it made sense to roll VGC's assets into TCM. Differential acceleration GC columns, VGC's main IP, are still viable and waiting patiently for us to make time for them.
My research focused on investigation of sensors and sensor systems, preferably microsensors when applicable; applications include gas and liquid phase analytes of environmental and industrial relevance. Our goal was to achieve adequate sensor selectivity by employing elegant chemistry and hyphenating sensor devices to chemical separation systems. Our group worked closely with the Institute for Development and Commercialization of Advanced Sensor Technology (IDCAST) in Dayton, Ohio (USA).
Investigate analytical methods for hydrocarbon analysis in the oilfield. Special emphasis placed on novel separation methods.
Developed a series of microsystems for gas analysis in the oilfield and other related system components. Personal research emphasis on analytical chemistry and novel separation methods.
Investigated the use of monolayer-protected gold-thiolate nanparticles (MPNs) as interfacial films for chemiresistor vapor sensor arrays. Reported first thorough investigation of the swelling and dielectric response mechanism, first to show data suggesting a dependence on analyte-thiolate mixing volumes (i.e. swelling efficiencies). Developed first response model for predicting MPN-CR relative-resistance responses as a function of vapor properties and concentration. Designed, fabricated, and integrated several systems and sub-systems related to the development of a MEMS gas chromatograph as part of the NSF Engineering Research Center for Wireless Integrated MicroSystems at the University of Michigan.
Performed research under James A. Cox. My research was based on electrochemical sensors (amperometric) employing sol-gel solid-electrolytes. We worked on a variety of sample matrices and target analytes including hydrazine species in air and a variety of liquid analytes in aqueous and non-aqueous solvents without supporting electrolyte.
