Coastal Engineer
CurrentI currently have a varied role as an engineer in the Marine and Coastal Risk Management Team at JBA. Some key experiences and attributes are:Coastal Change Adaptation Planning (CCAP) - Consulted with a Scottish council to identify flood and erosion hazards, risks, and triggers. I used SEPA and DynamicCoast datasets and implemented strategic CCAP pathways and proactive actions. Wave Transformation Modelling - Experienced using SWAN 1D and 2D models with a variety of offshore, emulated, and nearshore wave datasets.Wave Overtopping Modelling - Experienced conducting overtopping calculations (EurOtop I & II) on current and conceptual structures. I have delivered numerous assessments for the EA (SE) CDF framework. Rock Armour Design - Utilising overtopping volumes, rock stability, and scour calculations to optimise rock armour design for sites in England and Wales. Options Appraisal - I have conducted numerous longlist to preferred option appraisals on EA schemes at both SOC and OBC stages. Morphodynamics - I have used XBeach to assess short-term storm impacts and sediment dynamics on established sand dunes. Chartership - Academic appraisal with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) to enable me to pursue CEng status with the Engineering Council.
Research Fellow
A brief position on the EU-funded Intelligent Community Energy Project. My role was to assess the wave climate surrounding the Isle of Wight and identify potential for economic renewable energy generation.
Phd - Coastal Engineering
My work involved coding, implementing, and validating an established second-order wave generation formula in Plymouth's COAST laboratory. The novel contribution was an experimental facility which accurately recreates extreme wave-structure interactions in shallow water depths. The project supervision was split across the universities of Oxford, TU Delft, and Plymouth. The project was fully funded by the COAST laboratory with industry support from Edinburgh Designs Ltd. I produced two publications in the journal Coastal Engineering and presented internationally at ICCE 2022.
Field Research: Southern Thailand
An exchange funded by the Marie Curie Trust. I was based in the Faculty of Engineering at Mahidol Universty and assisted with data collection in Phuket, Khao Lak and Phang Gna regions of Southern Thailand. Our aim was to assess preparedness for future Tsunami events, as well as, assess the rebuild of key defences 15-years after the 2004 disaster. Our findings were presented at MARTECH 2020 and published in the conference proceedings.
Graduate Geoenvironmental Engineer
In this role I gained valuable site experience on a range of GI schemes from flood and coastal defence upgrades through to rail and road maintenance. My most prominent experience was working on the North Portsmouth coastal defence upgrade where I logged material from cable percussive, window sample, and concrete coring drilling techniques. It was here I got my first taste for coastal engineering.
