Senior engineering leader for our Stays business, the largest business unit at Airbnb--setting direction and providing architectural guidance to 500+ engineers. Generalized the learnings and patterns from search to help teams around the company with similar use cases. Stays technical leader for the migration to a service-oriented architecture. Worked closely with CTO Ari Balogh during his onboarding. Collaborated on the design of a multi-region engineering plan, with a specific focus on empowering growth in the China market.

Led a complete redesign of our Stays search infrastructure. Partnered with the engineering team, search product teams and the ranking team to redesign the data pipelines and serving infrastructure to improve reliability, scalability and ease of use for all stakeholders. Led the engineering effort to implement the redesign and successfully launched it on time, all while maintaining the existing system with high availability and doubling the engineering team size. Mentored my replacement as I transitioned off the team.This system was later used for Experiences search and continues to power both products today.

Started on the Data Infrastructure team to provide technical leadership after the departure of the previous technical leaders. Implemented key technology components for application logging and experiment analysis. The experimentation framework, ERF, became a foundation for decision making and product analysis at Airbnb and has even spawned companies (Eppo). Helped hire a team around me and my replacement so I could refocus on customer facing infrastructure for our Stays business.Led development of the pricing service. Improved performance and reliability, while centralizing pricing data pipelines and business logic that reduced price discrepancies between search and the rest of the product. Pricing was the second Java service at Airbnb, necessitating coordination with reliability engineering to define and implement core logging, monitoring, etc. systems that went on to be used as key components of Airbnb's future service-oriented architecture.

Third young alumni member of the Haverford Board of Managers. Participated in general board meetings and committee meetings. Provided one of two young alumni voices and the only voice with a technology background.

First full-time hire. Helped grow the team while growing the company from 5 million to over 130 million users.Focused on infrastructure, working closely with product development and native mobile engineering to build a composable, service-oriented backend in Python and Haskell. We seamlessly redesigned the mobile communications protocol to make it more scalable and reliable, rebuilt the backend to create a scalable service-oriented architecture, and managed database migrations all while scaling user growth 25x in three years.

Researched novel algorithms in motion planning, physical modeling and sound synthesis as part of the GAMMA Group with Ming C. Lin as my advisor. Published papers and spoke at conferences, including ACM Transactions on Graphics, I3D, IEEE Robotics and Automation.Left the PhD program after year two (with a masters) to focus on industry applications and consumer impact.

Developed a novel method for spam detection in Google Blogger with my mentor Raph Levien. Successfully balanced long term goals of the group with the limited time frame of a summer internship--shipping a working algorithm by the end of the summer.

Designed, created and maintained multiple databases used daily by thousands of clients to make critical financial decisions. Technical lead for a major effort to increase efficiency across multiple aspects of the product, including database changes and code refactoring. Worked closely with other engineers and development team members, planning and prioritizing the long and short term needs of both internal and external clients.
