About Will Nicholson
Born and raised in the New Zealand, I grew up surfing, skating, cycling, kite boarding, snow skiing and obsessively building stuff in the shed. My passion for making developed from this humble shed in my parent’s backyard and ignited a lifelong passion for well-designed and crafted products. Making and material exploration led to studying a Bachelor of Industrial Design with 1st class honors at Massey University in Auckland. Having received several national and international awards in recognition of my undergraduate work I continued my studies with a Master of Design in Wellington. My thesis took a holistic, practice-led exploration of New Zealand’s primary export industry which uncovered multiple design opportunities within logistical and transportation systems - challenging the status quo which has been embedded in export thinking for over 40 years. This project received a Gold Award at New Zealand’s Best Design Awards. Since my studies I have been working in a variety of lead transport and industrial design roles across Europe, the UK and New Zealand. From leading the design of emergency and tourism vehicles, to designing some of Triumph’s most coveted motorcycles, plus a few industry changing start-ups. Since 2020 I founded my design consulting business in the UK and at the end of 2023 founded MakeFuture – a multidisciplinary design studio focusing on delivering world-class design services in automotive, transportation and product design.Design and making continues to be my obsession and I am constantly working on new projects. Some of my recent projects include rebuilding and modifying old motorcycles, vintage bicycles, tinkering with old cars, crafting leather goods and building furniture.
