About Willow Battista

*Supporting small-scale, Indigenous, and regenerative food producers in leading and benefiting from the transformations happening in their systems.*After spending the first decade of my career supporting science-based, inclusive, participatory policy and management design in small-scale fishing communities around the world, I expanded my lens (in 2020) to focus on the transformation of entire food systems in order to help restore the planet and our relationship with it. My focus is on elevating small-scale producers and other marginalized groups, advancing regenerative production practices (in the ocean and on land), and integrating aquatic and terrestrial food systems for truly system-wide initiatives. In practice, I work to merge equitable, participatory decision-making with holistic, science-based and contextually-relevant solutions in order to foster and scale system-wide transformations so that we can feed and nourish the world while restoring, rather than depleting, planetary health. I seek to take the next step in my career at an organization that shares my commitment to catalyzing sustainable, equitable, climate resilient food systems across the globe.

Building the capacity of fishery system stakeholders to scientifically assess and sustainably manage their fisheries. This has included building a set of tools and approaches to improve fisheries management in data-limited settings, such as a model to quickly evaluate and rate all of the threats facing an ecosystem to help guide management actions and policy design (the CARE model); a set of principles that facilitate successful scaling up of pilot projects; and a step-wise framework for developing and implementing a science-based, climate-resilient fishery management plan in a data limited setting. I have also worked in communities around the world to train and support users as they seek to utilize our resources for more sustainable and resilient fishery systems. More recently I have worked to understand and apply the principles of equity and environmental justice to our work, and to help the organization do so throughout all of our internal and external initiatives.
