The Fairness Foundation is a new project that works to change the debate around fairness in order to build a fairer society. We are a registered charity (number 1044174) and are non-party-political. Our geographic focus is on England, although on some issues we look across the United Kingdom.Our mission is to change the terms of the public debate about fairness, to promote the benefits of a fair society, and to inspire citizens, the media and decision-makers to create a fairer society. In doing so, we explore what fairness means today and try to bring people together around a new consensus.

Founder and non-executive Chair of Tax Justice UK (http://www.taxjustice.uk), a campaigning and advocacy organisation. We want to ensure that everyone in the UK benefits from a sustainable, fair and effective tax system.

Responsible for the finance and IT functions as well as risk, compliance, facilities and security, with direct line management of three senior staff (Finance Director, IT Director and Deputy Director) and oversight of five others. DMI is an innovative social enterprise that delivers evidence-based mass media campaigns to change behaviours in developing countries. I led on developing strategy, designing projects and securing significant funding. - Developed fundraising strategy and function from scratch.- Built out two new business units: DMI Advisory (consulting arm) and DMI Labs (research and development arm). - Built strategic partnerships with a range of donors and partners to secure $19m of funding, as outlined below.- Led team to secure $4.9m to launch a randomised controlled trial in Burkina Faso of a radio family planning campaign: $2.3m from the Global Innovation Fund, $2.2m from a private US donor, $400,000 from USAID (DIV). - Led team to secure $3.45m of funding for scaling up a child health radio campaign across Burkina Faso: $1.3m from Alive & Thrive (Gates), $1.2m from Comic Relief, $765,000 from SPRING (USAID), $200,000 from a UK foundation.- Raised $1.75m from Unorthodox Philanthropy to launch a child health radio and TV campaign in Mozambique. - Led successful bid for the £3m media component of a five-year nutrition project in Tanzania.- Achieved a ‘standout charity’ recommendation from GiveWell, leading to donations and grants of over $800,000.- Secured $550,000 in unrestricted funding from the Mulago Foundation to set up offices in DRC and Mozambique.- Secured $1.05m from UNICEF, DFID and Save the Children to launch a radio campaign across 8 provinces of DRC.- Secured $1m from the Packard Foundation to run a family planning radio and TV campaign in Kinshasa, DRC.- Led team in Mozambique to win competitive bid for a $500,000 World Food Programme nutrition project. - Won $100,000 from Grand Challenges (Gates Foundation) to pilot a mobile phone video project in Burkina Faso.- Recruited Operations Director, Creative Director, West Africa Rep, DRC and Mozambique Country Directors, etc.

At the age of 20 I co-founded a charity to raise money to support educational projects in Kenya. I recruited a board of trustees with experience of Africa and construction, and patrons to help us raise funds. The charity has raised well over £1m since 1999 and built eight primary and secondary schools.

As a freelance consultant I worked with a number of clients in the voluntary and public sectors. I provided business development advice to the Business Bridge (an African education project at London Business School); wrote a strategy for the Department of Health on NHS involvement in international development; helped the Cabinet Office to make progress on a difficult policy area for the 2012 Olympics; and led a high-profile project for the Department of Health on NHS emergency preparedness.

I co-founded this innovative social enterprise that organises overseas volunteering assignments for people who want to use their business skills for good, by mentoring entrepreneurs in Kenya.

I led a team of five co-ordinating work across Government and beyond for DFID’s Iraq programme. For this role I regularly updated the Secretary of State and Prime Minister on developments in Iraq reconstruction, and led on communicating DFID’s Iraq messages to other parts of the UK Government, partners, and the UK and Iraqi public. Before that I was involved in cross-Government discussions on UK negotiating priorities on Africa for the 2007 G8 summit, and wrote a summary strategy for DFID on mutual accountability in international development. I also represented DFID at international conferences on policy coherence.

In 2004 I passed the Civil Service Fast Stream selection process and was assigned to the Department of Health. In my first posting I wrote a detailed cost-benefit analysis of using the national identity card scheme in the National Health Service, wrote and published the Department of Health's internal policy-making guidance, and helped to set up and run the 2005 General Election Unit to guide all DH and NHS staff and brief new Health Ministers. In my second posting I worked on emergency planning and resilience in the NHS; I was promoted to Grade 7 (Section Head) after only 15 months on the Fast Stream programme. Here I led a team of three people providing health policy and operational input to the UK Counter-Terrorism Strategy. During this period I co-ordinated the design, dissemination and analysis of the 2006 NHS National Capabilities Survey, wrote a key strategy document on business continuity in the NHS, and identified and drove forward priority action areas on NHS counter-terrorism protective security. I also co-ordinated the DH operational response with other agencies at COBRA after the 2005 London bombings.

After graduation I was selected for this highly competitive paid internship programme, providing a grounding in the UK voluntary sector. Among other activities I researched trading activity by UK charities, and wrote and published a 230-page book on charity trading, and I set up, managed and implemented a month-long residential training course in India for 20 UK graduates. After this I led a team of 11 young volunteers in preparing and running a week-long international youth conference in South Wales, involving 230 people from 35 countries.
