About Will Steward

A start-up person and entrepreneur, with 18 years of experience spanning growth strategy, marketing, sales, web/mobile app development, customer success and product strategy.I'm the CEO & Co-founder of Cobloom, the SaaS growth partner. We help Software companies to double down on their Initial Traction & accelerate ARR growth, with a customer-centric approach to Sales, Marketing & Customer Success. Our mission is to get the best products into the hands of buyers who need them, then maximise the value each and every customer gets from those products.In 2006, I founded SaaS online storage company, File Den. The product helped 3 million consumers & businesses to store & share their files online, with minimal hassle. Importantly (at the time), we were one of the first providers to offer direct linking for all file formats. The company was bootstrapped, and grown with a fully remote team, before being acquired in 2011.

    Working with a remote colleague (who offered to buy me a drink some day), I had an idea: to create an app which would enable people anywhere in the UK to send a friend or family member a drink. Our solution initially required custom hardware to be installed behind bars to process drink vouchers, which I managed the customisation of, remotely, with a Chinese manufacturer. At the time, not enough bar staff had smart phones to enable a completely app based approach to voucher validation ("no phone" policies for bar staff did not help), and anyone who's tried to build software in this sector knows what a nightmare POS System integration is!The company was funded by friends & family, proceeds from the File Den sale and a "pre-seed" angel round. To reach consumers, we took a region-by-region approach combining PR with Guerilla marketing. From 2010 to 2012 we were featured on TV, Radio, Print and Digital Media including the BBC, Daily Mail, Cosmopolitan & Hospitality Trade Magazines. One of my favourite moments was an event we hosted with one of our partner bars in London: where we dropped liquid nitrogen into 70 pints of beer (video link below). While the company didn't achieve the outcome we worked hard towards, I learned a lot. Our technology made buying vouchers easy... But we were in a recession, and pubs & bars were some of the worst hit. In parallel, people were moving away from SMS to other messaging platforms: we saw a future focusing on an "app-only" approach, but ultimately couldn't raise follow-on funding to pursue it.

    I created File Den when I was 15, and still in full time education at school. I developed the initial web application, then managed ongoing product development & growth strategy. The company had a fully remote team, and zero employees. The business was bootstrapped, and grown organically, without raising external capital. In late 2010, I made the decision to sell, seeing the rapid commoditisation of the space. Rather than change direction, I began reaching out to strategic acquisition targets & negotiated the sale with value-added VC, myCloud Holdings. The company shortly went on to become part of CX, Inc.

    I decided to work with Zoombu in 2010, to gain experience working as part of an exceptional Startup team, building an exciting product. Before Zoombu, my experience was limited to running File Den, and I had only worked as part of a remote team. I wanted to see what life was like inside a venture backed Startup, so I could decide whether VC funding or selling was the best move for File Den.I reached out to Startups across London, shared my prior experience, how I thought I could help them, and asked who was interested. After visiting a few of them, the team & challenges at Zoombu excited me the most.I worked as part of the Zoombu team, balancing the role with File Den's needs. While part of the team, I was primarily involved in front-end web development, plus growth marketing strategy & execution. My proudest achievement was a piece of software which extracted travel information from API's & scrapers developed by the rest of the team, then created content pages, to drive traffic via Organic Search. The pages were SEO optimised, and would tell you how far a place of interest was from other relevant places of interest, among other facts, to generate unique, "human sounding" content for thousand's of travel destinations, flight routes, airports, train stations, holiday resorts and other points of interest across Europe, that were indexed and ranked in search engines.Shortly after leaving, Zoombu was acquired by Skyscanner.
