-The Chicago Area Alternative Education League (CAAEL) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that has been providing a full spectrum of customized academic, athletic and art programs to over 100,000 of the Chicagoland area's most at-risk boys and girls since 1976. -CAAEL participants attend over 50 alternative schools/programs from 79 public school districts spanning 8 Illinois counties. -These alternative education students, ages 7-21, may be aggressive or withdrawn, emotionally disturbed or learning disabled, behaviorally challenging or socially isolated, gang involved and/or drug dependent, and depressed and/or truant. -CAAEL sponsors over 850 events annually that take place during the school day and emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal responsibility instead of winning and losing. -Students must meet attendance, academic, and behavioral eligibility criteria each week in order to participate in CAAEL practices and events. DURING THE SCHOOL DAY-CAAEL programs are delivered through each partner schools' instructional staff, utilizing their own physical resources and transportation systems. By incorporating the programs into already existing services through specialized training and support, CAAEL impacts the education of thousands of youth annually at minimal per student cost. -CAAEL is the only organization providing this broad scope programming for Illinois’ growing number of at-risk youth.
