To be an actor is to have many occupations--and not merely those of the many characters one plays. It is in the nature of the business that most of its practitioners find employment in other fields to sustain themselves between acting jobs. I have been many things--laborer, truck driver, clerk, teacher, manager, writer, editor, webmaster, designer, and more--in many industries, including theatre, logistics, MH/MR, food service, real estate, finance, film, television, newspapers, education, and libraries. My career has taken two parallel, if not entirely simultaneous, paths. As an actor, teenage involvement in community theatre led to a conservatory education, then co-founding a theatre company, membership in AFTRA and Actor's Equity, and years of freelance work, followed by a lengthy hiatus and finally, a return to work in the casting pool of the small but vibrant theatre community in State College, PA, where the focus is no longer on trying to make a living at my craft but rather to employ my years of experience to make art. Here I have formed continuing working relationships with the State College Shakespeare Festival, The Next Stage, LAF Rep, Penn State Public Broadcasting, and the Penn State School of Theatre.An even earlier involvement in visual art and photography led to work as a self-taught advertising and promotional designer, an apprentice at a commercial printing company, page layout artist at a New York publishing firm, art director and writer/editor at a small newsmonthly, and several positions at Penn State, including Web coordinator, editor, and my current position of visual communications specialist--involving mainly promotional and publication design and photography, with occasional forays into signage, mapmaking, and video and audio production.
