As senior preventive conservator for the exhibitions program, I have responsibility for all temporary exhibitions and displays, as well as outgoing loans, international touring exhibitions and National Partnership galleries. This entails specifying environmental control, lighting levels, in-case materials testing and integrated pest management.

I had overall responsibility for the collections care and management for 19 historic sites throughout the south east of England, as well as three major collections stores. I also had to manage budgets, staff and volunteers, as well as tendering and commissioning external conservation work.

In my role as a VSA within the National Museum of Flight, my day to day tasks included the monitoring of exhibitions, assisting visitors with any queries regarding the exhibits, and running the shop on site. Working in the shop includes managing stock levels and processing the takings at the end of each day. I also create invoices, take bookings for groups, and deal with telephone calls regarding the museum and related events. I also assist with ‘Out of Hours’ events on evenings, and educational events that involve me giving presentations to school and other interest groups. I am also part of a volunteer group of staff that assists with the marketing of the museum, using the NMS blog and social networking sites, posters and leaflets.

I was responsible for processing customer correspondence at the first point of contact. I was part of a team that was responsible for the maintenance of taxpayers' employment records. This required great attention to detail and accuracy with the data used. I was also required to used MS Office, particularly Word and Excel, as part of my day to day job, as well as interrogating computerised databases in order to extract information when required to answer a customer query. I also had to provide written responses to the customer's aforementioned queries, which must fully explain the circumstances while avoiding the use of overly complex terminology and remaining within the Official Secrets and Data Security Acts. I liaised with my line manager through both face-to-face meetings and MS Outlook, which enabled me to keep abreast of targets and departmental objectives which could change on an hourly basis.• Rated as a Top Performer in recognition of my production being on average 20% above target.• Produced spreadsheets and documents of guidance to assist other members of my team in achieving similar quality results.• Taken part in meetings with Deputy Director of Edinburgh group to discuss the progress of the Evening Teams and to arrange an action plan for tackling any problems that arose.• Chaired problem solving and team meetings, ensuring that all view points are heard and recognised before reaching a decision.

My duties included running the customer services desk, where I was responsible for dealing with the queries and complaints of members of the public. I also assisted with the running of the checkout department, which meant managing large numbers of staff and the cash room responsibilties usually undertaken by management. I helped to train new starts on both the checkouts and the customer services desk.
