About Lorraine Wilson

I am a Business and Management graduate from NUI Maynooth. I am delighted I chose this course as it gives a broad look into the business world. I have a strong passion for marketing, sustainability and HRM. Throughout my studies and working life so far I have developed my skills to work by myself or as part of a team. Throughout my studies I completed an ECDL course. This has enabled me to become very computer literate using the likes of Word Document, Excel and Presentation etc. I have also completed a HACCP course. I have no hesitation with approaching and communicating with clients or co-workers. I find that I have a keen eye when it comes to spotting potential opportunities and mistakes within a company.

    I have gained experience using software systems such as Maximo, FAAR and Click through my role here. These roles are very varied and have aided me to improve my organisational, excel, multi-tasking and communication skills even more so. As part of my licensing role, I created maps of locations using FAAR, where a licence is required before works can take place. I then attached these alongside an application form and then contacted various county councils to apply for licences. Whilst undertaking the role of scheduling and dispatch admin, I undertook numerous job types. My main priorities were dispatching the work to the crews and marking works off as complete. Communicating with the agents was a frequent part of this role and on occasion I contacted customers also. Other parts of this role to name a few were requesting new tasks to be raised, making appointments for some agents and answering escalations. In order to carry out these jobs effectively and timely, one needs to be highly organised and motivated.

    Before I finished my degree in May, the owners of a local shop approached me and offered me a job working in their family owned store. I worked there part-time. I took on great responsibility while working there. My role included closing the shop up at the end of the day (9pm) on my own, making sure everything was in order for the next day and that the premise was locked securely.Ensuring that all monies match the books was also a big responsibility.Other duties included stock rotation, checking dates of products and keeping the store clean and tidy whilst also dealing with customers on a first hand basis in a professional, concise and friendly manner. This role has greatly improved my customer services skills as I met new people as well as regular customers all the time. Some customers may be more difficult than others and I feel I dealt with those issues in a succinct, mannerly fashion. Creating a friendly atmosphere is essential in gaining and retaining customers. Once these needs are met customers are more likely to frequent on a continuous basis.

    During this internship I worked as their website administrator. This job entailed me editing descriptions and creating descriptions of the content of the products on their website. Part of my job was also to take photographs of some items. An additional task that I took on board whilst working here was a Lean Project. In the project I highlighted areas in which I felt the company could be improved for themselves and their customer experience. Some of these tips as to how to improve the company included the use of social media to help market the company all the way down to simple suggestions as to put up sign posts directing customers to the store and giving the store a clean and tidy up in order to entice customers to revisit.
