How can I be authentic? I used to ask myself this question a lot. I, like many of us in our 21st century interconnected world, wanted to stand out. I wanted to be someone who didn’t just sit on the sidelines or follow the crowd. To achieve this lofty goal of mine I employed a number of western cultural aphorisms to my worldview. “Just be yourself!” I would say. “Fake it till you make it!” and “Don’t care about what others think!” These slogans of positivity worked to vary degrees for a brief time. But soon some conflicting, disconcerting thoughts revealed themselves in this process. I did care what others thought of me. I did not know who I was and therefore didn’t know how to be myself. And somehow faking authenticity struck me as contradictory at the best of times, hypocritical at the worst. I, like many of us in our 21st century interconnected world, was lost. I did find one guiding star while wandering in the darkness, however. An insatiable curiosity for the world and the people in it. So, I left my life behind in Canada and travelled across the ocean to South East Asia where I got my ESL Teaching Certificate in Thailand. I made my way to South Korea and landed in Seoul where, little did I know at the time, I would spend the next decade of my life. In my career as an Elementary ESL teacher, Adult ESL Instructor, and Communications Consultant, I learned the power of creating supportive environments, cultivating patience, managing diverse groups, and encouraging curiosity. I developed empathy and adapted to the varied needs of students and clients, helping them navigate communication challenges and grow confident in their voices.I now bring these insights back to Toronto, where I’m applying my communication expertise to the mental health field. I work remotely as a Communications Consultant with clients in Seoul and volunteer as an inbound crisis responder for the Distress Center of Greater Toronto. I no longer ask myself “How can I be authentic?” but rather:• “How can I be more genuine?”• “How can I be more compassionate?”• “How can I be a better husband, friend, and communicator?”• “How can I help others embrace their challenges and live fulfilling lives?”I don’t yet have the answers, but as the writer Albert Camus once said, “the struggle towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart.” And perhaps it is.
