AS Transformation Manager I was responsible for finalising the introduction of a new Emptoris eTendering system which I helped to configure as well. I trained procurement staff on various locations.Additionally I scoped a tender for e-Invoicing, aiming to improve efficiency in our invoice handling in Account Payable.I worked on the introduction of Purchasing Cards, in this specific case with the aim to reduce administration for small purchases and to ensure prompt payment to SSE's suppliers. I investigated the pros and cons and how we can mitigate any risk on using cards.I coached a buyers in understanding the procurement systems and procedures. I ensured my knowledge of the SSE systems was handed over in the best possible way.I enjoyed this period, even though I knew it would come to an end. It is challenging but rewarding to work with efficiency improvements (methods and systems) if you can convince people of the benefits of change.

I managed a shared services department within Energy Networks Procurement, after I created the department and defined its scope. The team assists in tendering for values up to £200m per annum with a high turnover count. The team eventually settled on 7 procurement officers, located in Glasgow, Perth and Reading. I enjoyed coaching all of team into becoming self-managing and create understanding of the tasks involved in making the team successful. As I managed the team, I personally have been involved in other activities. I worked hard to improve Procurement’s relationship with Logistics by introducing procedures to ensure our agreements were kept live, thus achieving uninterrupted supply into the warehouse. This meant the Logistics department had an improved view of procurement activities and can contribute.I helped improving the efficient use of our procurement systems (Oracle & Emptoris) and procurement procedures. Focussing on using advanced features and removing unnecessary administration or manual work.I did a few tenders to help other teams achieving their goals and solved conflicts after introducing new frameworks by other teams. I do like a challenge and I did solve an issue with PE materials suppliers and achieved a solution to keep all involved parties satisfied.I did more mediating and convincing during this period, making to stakeholders aware of potential problems and proposing solutions to avoid.I assured opportunities were used, a recent quick saving was to challenge requesters on a requirement and instead of single sourcing we tendered, resulting in avoiding £175k spend (resulting contract value £57k).Additionally I made sure new people were introduced properly to Procurement and temporarily adopted them into the team to coach them into understanding SSE Procedures and methods.

Overseeing around 50 frameworks.A noteworthy personal negotiation was a plant hire contract worth about £20m for use across SSE, SGN and SSE related businesses, significantly reducing administration and costs.In this period I supported the SSE Networks team with a number of tenders.

I managed a team of four Procurement Officers, who were responsible for a multitude of agreements covering plant purchases (Transformers, Switchgear, Services, Engineering and Contracting), also covering a large number of stocked material.I was during this period responsible for Plant and Contracting in SSE and for a part of the SGN purchases.I introduced Category Management for Transformers. Personally responsible for frameworks and one-of contracts established for high power transformers, quad boosters, reactors, capacitor banks, switchgear and contracting, with annual spend in excess of £50m. And a memorable one off purchase of a bio-methane injection station for SGN.Responsible for purchases in SGN’s gas network, amongst others a contract for a new pipeline system to the Isle of Wight (longest directional drill at the time, £10m).

My first position in SSE made me responsible for a variety of Framework Agreements and one-off contracts for Gas and Electricity networks. I became responsible for procurement of all transformers and switchgear for use in the networks and assisted or performed procuring for the non-regulated businesses. I picked up the engineering contracts for substation works and got introduced in Gas network projects.Most memorable for me are a few project purchases for renewal of older 132 kV substations, solving an issue with a transformer supplier and for the gas networks I procured the initial personal gas monitoring devices.

As Procurement Manager I was responsible for two buyers and as a team responsible for the local spend in the paper mill. I was involved in the mill management team, promoting the use of procurement in savings initiatives and participating in reorganisations to improve efficiency. We were also the link between the mill and central procurement.Notably I introduced plant lease (sale and lease back), successfully controlling plant costs. Another achievement was introducing a consignment stock for stationery.Initiatives identified were cleaning and catering contracts and following scoping this with HR I achieved savings around 7%.My team procured all maintenance, service and goods contracts for the mill. I provided help with R&D projects in the mill, addressing commercial issues on process change. A very enjoyable part of the job.I was involved in investments throughout my career at Norske Skog and first introduced a contract model in the paper ill, later contributed to establishing contract models for the group.I created and managed contracts with individual values up to £40m. Investments in debarking plant, TMP relocation and many other smaller improvement projects (mechanical and automation projects).I have been involved in research and development work in the mill, together with the responsible engineers to establish new processes and addressing the commercial aspects
