At age 23 years, my first major role was with Youngs Brewery, where I spent 18 years developing wine sales in their 250 pubs, hotels and restaurants - our sales out-performed the market every year. This success was largely down to the introduction of 20 wines by the glass (using wine preservation systems) and supported by a fully comprehensive staff training programme. I learn't that if you focus on wine sales, food and beer sales increase too! In 2004, to help other on-trade businesses develop their wine sales, I founded Vintellect, an on-trade wine consultancy. Vintellect offers advice to companies on wine sales and supplies a range of wine preservation systems together with staff training programmes which guarantee to drive wine sales.In 2008, as another string to our bow, Vintellect launched the world's 1st totally interactive computer-based wine course which includes both practical wine tasting and food and wine matching.However, more recently, Vintellect is pleased to announce it's partnership with Enomatic UK which will revolutionise the way wine is sold in the on-trade.Just as coffee service has changed dramatically over the last two decades, the way wine is served will change in a similar way. Every establishment serious about wine sales, will serve their wines from a dispensing cabinet which will not only display the wine but store it at the correct temperature and preserve it so that every glass of wine sold is served in perfect condition.Until now, wine dispensing and preservation cabinets have been too expensive - a luxury reserved for 5* hotels and Michelin* restaurants.
