Summary Statement: What I love best in my practice is advising clients on sophisticated, multi-faceted transactions that involve nuanced strategy, large capital investment, complex structures, long lived infrastructure assets, regulatory overlays, political sensitivities and novel economics . . . but I can do plain vanilla transactions, too. I work most in the energy/sustainability and telecommunications industries, with startups through Fortune 50 companies.Why WBK? I started my practice at a big national law firm, where I felt too siloed and there was too much emphasis on throughput. I have found that clients often don't want a lawyer who can only "hammer nails." They want trusted advisors who can think across disciplines and can take a practical view of risks and strategy. That's the way I practice, and it's WBK's organizational culture. I'm a corporate attorney by training, but to help solve client issues, I find myself digging deep into real estate and tax items on renewable projects or financial books for a company being sold, brainstorming business processes to find efficiencies, drafting legislation to solve rural broadband easements, and most recently, working with a small WBK team to dream up and structure an audacious solution to a decades-old collective action problem hindering interregional electric transmission in the West (The Western Transmission Consortium). What else? It's been a fun and eclectic ride, which also gives me a lot to draw on when facing new challenges for clients. Before practicing law, I did teambuilding workshops with Goldman Sachs and Big 4 accounting firms, as well as educational programs with juvenile offenders. I managed development and finance for non-profits. I built financial models for affordable housing and databases for small business logistics management. I concentrated on both physics and religion in college. I summited peaks in the Himalayas and in the U.S. as both a student and instructor on mountaineering courses. I delved into the details of insurance markets after my house burned in the 2021 Colorado wildfires. I mediate and negotiate with my two children on almost a daily basis. What continues to amaze me is how context from a seemingly unrelated experience becomes a relevant clue to solve client challenges.
