Visit my web site on www.infinite-arts.co.uk to learn more.DASALYNThe beginning of our journey to carnivalQuote from the DASALYN Board; The journey for us started with a pilot project in our children’s school, which is Christ Church CE Primary in Fenton Stoke on Trent. This was a project funded by the Creative Partnership where the children and staff interviewed a number of arts practitioners, who they wanted to come in and bring the school community together. The winning practitioner was Jay Gardiner an experienced artist and event manager. He worked alongside a member of staff and the Creative Agent to build a two-term project that was aimed at getting more parents involved with the school and their children’s education. He used the arts as a vehicle to do this, by setting up a range of workshops with 9 other artists who he brought into our school to provide workshops. From this we received arts training just for the adults and then a number of us would attend all the workshops across the school from foundation to year 6. It was from these basic workshops that our passion for the arts and carnival grew. Jay had shown us some of his work on costumes from Notting Hill carnival. A small number of us decided that we wanted to design and build a real carnival costume for our school and parade. With further training from Jay we went on to build a major costume, 3 backpack floor members for our parade. From the day of the carnival until now we are constantly being stopped in the streets by other parents who are still singing the praises of the carnival. We are all passionate about what the carnival has done, and can still do for our school and community. While providing us with a better understand of another culture it also enables us to learn new skills and develop ourselves. Your children will become what you are, so be what you want them to be. They then design, manage and run a youth showcase event to 500 of their peers to share their message about under aged drinking and highlight the talented youth in their area. This event was a concert style event that was uses to open discussions on issues that affect them and their peers. The project gave them real life experiences, as they build themselves as individuals and worked towards their own unique event. The motivational train aspect of the project developed the ambassadors into confident, out spoken individuals and positive role models. The project worked with the head of outside play and education at the city council Pat Shelley, he provided a link with the local youth strategies. Our main focus was under aged drinking and related issues such as anti social behaviour and employment. Much of these issues were down to the lack of after hour’s activities available to young people across the city. The project provided the young people with training to enable them to have the confidence to say NO, and promote a more active and healthier life style through activities they could all relate to.Members of the steering group then built an alcohol awareness workshop that they would take into 4 schools across Staffordshire, they presented their workshop to just over 450 students in years 8 & 9.You Can Do It youth project is a youth organisation that offers high schools across the country, two day workshops for a whole year group from year 8 to 9. The workshops are aimed at these groups of young people to raise awareness of issues that affect them, issues such as excessive drink and drug abuse. We have also run a number of music events where we were able to educate the young people that attended, and were supported by ITV fixers for our last event. Show less

Local businesses working with artists and schools and all of this brought together through a number of events across the city and region.Through the Stoke on Trent carnival and its committee we working to build an event in July 2003 to bring together the community on a family filled fun day. From 1989 - 1992, I was a member of the management committee that set-up the new goal for the organisation. Our goal was to build the first Carnival College in the world. This was set-up in 1991 offering GNVQs in Art and Design. At the same time I set-up the Mobile Carnival Arts Education Resource (MCAER), I set this up to cover the gap left by the college, the MCAER worked mainly in schools, colleges, youth clubs and housing estates, with children of all ages and adults. To do this I had to find the funding and clients, market and publicise the project. I then constructed a workshop programme that worked within the National Curriculum and in 1998 NVQ’s and GNVQ’s. Trained staff to enable them to provide the service that would best promote our company. Within 5 years I was able to build the project to the point where it would bring in over £280,000 per year.Over the ten years of the Mobile, I employed around thirty members of staff, mainly carnival practitioners, degree art and design students and advanced level GNVQ and NVQ students from our college. I also dealt with office and staff administration, writing funding applications, service level agreements, event management, budgeting and updating the programme. I would meet with funding bodies, schools, colleges and fundraising through the private sector. After receiving a marketing grant from the London Arts Board I made a number of changes in the mobile the most noticeable being the name changing to The Mobile Arts Service (this is MAS).

I was recruited to the post of Executive Director of PBCA in 1997, the task ahead of me was to build an even more structured managerial, financial base, raise the profile and attend more events, which I would manage. It would take me three years to achieve these goals. Show less
