Edstruments is working to empower K-12 leaders to more effectively and equitably use financial resources to serve students. As a business development intern, I will work to rapidly scale and advance the company’s impact this summer to serve school districts as they navigate the difficult fiscal tradeoffs on the horizon and ensure districts are able to provide all students with a high-quality education in the upcoming school year.

It gave current day context to the 1800s which increased student engagement. The combination of creativity and present-day relevance allowed students to broach a challenging part of history with experiences they had in their own lives (though surprisingly, most students do not have Facebook, a fact that surprised me and made me feel outdated). I taught two classes individually and one with a mentor in 8th Grade American Studies which focused on developing students critical thinking ability, the process of writing, and research skills through United States history. Participated in weekly ‘Fellows Seminars’ focused on both pedagogy and professional development, which involved reading various teaching resources, discussing best practices and learning how to be a better teacher in the first year in the profession.

I was the head coach of the Junior Varsity team at Pacific Ridge High School, working with sixteen freshmen and sophomores of varying levels of skill. This included (among other things) planning and executing practices, traveling to games and managing my team, and, of course, actually coaching games. While we started slow (we started 1-4), at the end of the season, we finished 9-1 in our final 10 games, thus winning the non-existent JV League Championship.

I observed 10th grade U.S. History and 12th grade Psychology in the fall of 2013. Beginning in January 2014, I planned and taught twelve weeks in those classes (4 class periods per day) with observation and feedback from cooperating teachers as well as Northwestern professors throughout. Hands-on experience developing and executing lesson plans, assessing students and designing resources with a particular audience in mind.

Worked with unaccompanied minors who had entered into the United States illegally as their cases were handled through the Department of Justice. Provided any and all support and logistics needed to help run a 275 person facility on the South Side of Chicago. Additionally, worked to formally teach the participants English.
