Wicked problems are the social or cultural problems that must be dealt with but are extremely difficult or near impossible to solve due to the large scale interconnected nature of the system environment that characterizes them. For example, problems such as hunger, obesity, food access, long term sustainability and waste management are all issues embedded in the very complex environment of food systems.I’m also interested in how social enterprise can be applied to dealing with these intransigent problems; in particular, “Community Enterprises” which are commercial endeavors operated by non-profit organizations.

Chester, PA had been without a grocery store since 2001 and more than 54% of families in the City had to travel too far for groceries. Commercial grocers had failed the people of Chester. That’s why we developed the first nonprofit supermarket/grocery store in the United States. Fare & Square fist opened at 9th and Trainer Streets on September 28, 2013.Fare & Square offers shoppers convenient access to “good food right around the corner”. It sells nutritious food staples with a focus on fresh produce, fresh meats, deli, dairy, seafood, and frozen foods and help stretch customers’ dollars and give them more for their money. SNAP and WIC are accepted along with everyday low pricing for all customers,Fare & Square has created 45 new jobs in Chester, hiring from the community as much as possible.
