Pintail Power LLC provides technology, systems and projects that synergistically combine thermal and cryogenic energy storage with renewable and conventional generation to economically reduce fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions, increase renewable generation, and enhance grid reliability.

Resumed consulting practice to focus on integration of gas and renewable resources via innovation in the generation, storage, & use of power. Provided diligence, technical evaluation and advice to Venture Capital, Government agencies, & private companies in the U.S. & abroad. Supported efforts to acquire 1200 MW of gas fired generation, 400 MW wind farm, and develop a new-build 550 MW solar hybrid combined cycle. Invited speaker at the PowerGen International Financial Forum & the Latin American Smart Grid Forum.

Re-focused organization onto global project execution, with engineering teams in California, Australia and multiple Indian sites, in coordination with Paris HQ. Managed product internationalization and supported supplier qualification and quality efforts, construction management and technical field assistance. Implemented PMI-based project/program management disciplines, and achieved on-time engineering deliverables for projects in Arizona, Australia, and India. Managed engineering, construction, commissioning and operations functions in U.S., Australia, and India. Represented AREVA Solar to customers, general and trade press, government agencies, and at conferences. Led development of CLFR direct steam technology to price-performance leadership in the solar thermal market, resulting in selection for >500MW of projects, including Australia Solar Flagships and Reliance India. Built a highly motivated and effective engineering organization which achieved on-time release of the next next generation v2 SSG, meeting roadmap cost, performance and LCOE targets. Met with customers, banks and engineers in support of more than $1 billion of new business announced within 15 months of acquisition. Conceived and led design, commissioning and testing of the 7.2 MWth v1.3+ SSG4 program. SSG4 met or exceeded all criteria for project cost, schedule, Bill of Materials cost, Levelized Cost Of Energy, and reliability. SSG4 led directly to sales in the US, India, and Australia and resulted in 100% earn-out payment.

Developed and implemented a technology/product roadmap, and led negotiation with AREVA for the SSG4 Earn-out technology demonstration. Conceived a novel technical approach (Once-Through Solar Steam Generator) to enable a changed business model and closing of “D-round” funding to sustain Ausra until the sale to AREVA. Re-invigorated and re-focused Ausra team to retain key talent in a challenging environment. Instituted Product Development Process, initiated PMI certifications for key staff, and secured ASME ‘S’ certification for design, construction and stamping of fired boilers. Modified existing plant to achieve first ever superheated steam from a CLFR system. Led proposal team to win competitive bid at a California utility.

Coordinated engineering, construction and commissioning of three v1.2 saturated steam solar boilers at Ausra’s Kimberlina Power Station in 2008, including obtaining special state operating permits.

Undertook innovative projects for clients in the power, gas, water and manufacturing industries, and provided investor due diligence. Selected projects:• gas turbine modifications (speed sense valve for Rolls-Royce 501) for IPT• gas turbine power plant control systems upgrade for a Canadian firm• novel LNG regasification concept for a major US utility• novel fluid mechanics designs for air pollution control, water damage prevention, and adhesive application for various clients• advanced technology program planning a for solar power tower developer

Developed requirements, specifications, plans and oversaw development, test and deployment of web/database applications for high tech firms.

Managed systems and new product engineering for clients, including physical and data security, telecommunications, and utility power transformer monitoring instrument. Managed customer liaison for hardware/software projects, prepared proposals and secured new business.

Led conceptualization and development of a novel freeze crystallization water treatment technology, resulting in six patents. Managed mechanical, electrical, software, and industrial design efforts to develop and test engineering and appearance prototypes. Negotiated evaluation contracts with potential licensees and manufacturers, and managed development and delivery of prototypes. Received Best Paper and Best Presentation Awards at International Appliance Technical Conference. Proposed, won and completed SBIR contracts.

Led development of a new 2 MW modular cogeneration system, and managed engine development program and technology transfer with Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Introducing rapid product development and concurrent engineering methods that set new corporate standard for excellence. Initiated operational improvements which increased efficiency and profitability of IPT power plants.

Achieved commercial operation of three first-of-their kind Cheng Cycle cogeneration units at two locations within ten months of hire. Proposed and led changes to reduce cost and schedule. Managed turbine test program with General Motors Allison Division to obtain detailed performance and lifetime data of steam-injected gas turbines. Granted three patents.

Worked for Diablo Canyon project in the Instrument & Controls Group on the Control Room Simulator. Reviewed models, software, documentation and acceptance test procedures for electrical, mechanical and nuclear systems. Coordinated with Operations and Engineering groups and worked 1/3 time at Westinghouse site.
