About Weh Yeoh

I'm here because of Roger. On my first day in kindergarten, my teacher, Miss Pickering, sat me next to a boy named Roger. He had thick, Coke-bottle glasses, and scrunched his nose to squint whenever he concentrated.“Roger can’t see colours,” Miss Pickering told me. “So I need you to help him pick the right pencils when we are colouring in. Can you do that?”I nodded. That year, when we coloured the sky, I picked out the blue pencil for him. For the grass, the green pencil.Roger and Miss Pickering taught me valuable lessons. Not everyone is the same. We all do things differently. And sometimes, all it takes is a little bit of help for someone else to do join in. At that age, I hadn't been able to put a word on it, but disability and inclusion were things that I intuitively understood.---I have over two decades of experience as a social impact worker, physiotherapist, and author, driven by a passion for creating lasting social change and inclusion for people with disabilities. I am the CEO and Co-Founder of Umbo, a social enterprise that connects allied health professionals to rural and remote communities, and the author of Redundant Charities, a thought-provoking book that challenges the status quo of the charitable sector.I also founded OIC Cambodia, the first initiative to develop speech therapy in Cambodia, and Happy Kids Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic for children with disabilities. I have shared my insights and expertise as a TEDx speaker, a board member, a lecturer, a tutor, and a consultant for various organisations and institutions. I believe that when it comes to doing good, how we go about doing it is far more important than what we do.Interested to work together? Hit me up with a message!

    Author
Redundant Charities Sep 2023 - Present
"Bold and counterintuitive. 'Redundant Charities' will make you rethink the business of giving and have you questioning whose interests are really served. An important read for anyone who cares about equality."Antoinette Lattouf, Broadcaster, Columnist and Author of How to Lose Friends and Influence White PeopleRedundant Charities' is a thought-provoking book that challenges everything we thought we knew about charities. Authored by Weh Yeoh, an entrepreneur, TEDx Speaker, and social impact worker with two decades of experience in the sector, this book presents a daring and personal exploration of the inherent flaws within today's charitable models and offers bold alternatives for creating lasting social change. Not just a critique; 'Redundant Charities' is also a compelling blueprint for those looking for alternatives to the inherently flawed design of charities today with compelling examples and solutions. At the heart of the book lies an audacious claim: Perhaps the most impactful action a charity can take - is to shut down. Drawing on his extensive experience and unique perspective, Weh Yeoh delves deep into the inner workings of charitable organisations, shedding light on systemic problems that hinder their effectiveness.

    Phnom Penh, Kh
In 2013, I founded OIC Cambodia, which will establish speech therapy as a universally accessible, locally led profession in Cambodia. And yet, this isn't a story about me. It's a story about Cambodia, a story about people being left behind, and a system that prioritises others. This is why it's important for us to not only think about how to help, but also, when we will stop helping. You can check out why OIC will leave Cambodia, in the year 2030 here: http://www.wehyeoh.com/when-to-stop-helping-cambodia/Overseen over $500,000 of funding raised for this program, of which 75% comes from non government sources. •I currently manage and interact with an energetic and resourceful team of 10 staff, governance board in Cambodia, two fundraising committees in Australia, and engage over 50 volunteers.
