With the growing presence of digitization and automation in train operation, it is crucial to understand the impact of such developments on users. Therefore, together with a team of Human Factor experts, through the carrying out of research projects, we investigate the effect of these changes on factors such as mental workload, performance, and safety. This is done by identifying user requirements, developing and designing solutions, carrying out experiments in both virtual and live environments, and analyzing findings. The conclusions of these projects can then be used in order to inform better and more user-centered design decisions, ensuring that the human perspective is considered. In my role, I work on several projects, such as developing a new research-oriented train simulator, the implementation of new safety as well as operator advice and information systems, and developing the man-machine interface within an Automated Train Operation (ATO) system.
