Profile bio

About James Wolfe

I have a confession to make: I don’t love numbers. I’m not the type to geek out over prime numbers or memorize pi to the 100th digit. What I do love is story-telling. There are a myriad of ways to tell a story and I am obsessed with all of them. Movies, books, television shows, comic books,… and data. I don’t love numbers for the sake of loving numbers; I love the stories that numbers can tell. The data won’t do all the work for you. They’re your muse, they will tell what the story is but you have to figure out the best way to tell the story so that you can engage people. The most effective way to communicate is through a narrative. Data can be persuasive but it won’t inspire anyone to act unless you wrap it in a compelling story. I love finding that narrative hidden in the data and developing it into something that can convince people to take action. My Journey:1) Cornell University – I attended the ILR School where my concentration was on organizational behavior. I got to study human behavior (something that has always fascinated me) and run Division I XC and T&F on one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.2) U. S. Navy – The United States Armed Forces are the best place in the world to learn how to be a leader. Serving in a deployable unit is a young person’s game which means that a junior officer in their 20’s will get handed levels of responsibility that most civilians twice their age can only dream of. 3) University of Michigan - Earning my MBA at the Ross School of Business is how I learned to find the story that the data wants to tell you. We didn’t have majors but I gravitated toward Strategy & Marketing. Go Blue! 4) 24 Hour Fitness – Being a member of the Data & Analytics team at 24 has allowed me to combine my 2 passions: story-telling (through data) and fitness. The office is directly above one of the company’s gyms. It’s a dream setup. 5) Jenny Craig – Even though I was on the Financial Planning & Analysis team, I also got to do a lot of work with Sales and Operations. As the System Administrator for Oracle Essbase, I worked with the data through its entire lifecycle and became a full-stack analyst.

Listed skills include Military, Analysis, Strategy, Training, and 3 others.
