    Business of Biotechnology M.B.A. Fellowship As a Research Scientist I lead efforts to develop and perform new cell based assays and immunoassays to test naturally occurring marine toxins on human and non-human, mammalian tissues and pathogenic microbial cultures. As a member of this semi-industrial laboratory I developed and maintained mammalian cell lines documenting transfections protocols, storage conditions, media requirements, and cryogenic stock inventories using aseptic technique. In the conduct of this research I and my team of researchers developed protocols for high-throughput analysis of sequencing data, purification of samples and use of automated (robotic) fluid and sample handling using new technologies such as the Image Xpress Micro System (Molecular Devices), Nanion automated patch-clamp system, and Flex Station III micro-plate reader. Additionally, I managed sample storage of both cellular tissue and chemical samples, was tasked with documenting and analyzing data obtained from multiple experiments, maintained records of laboratory supplies and inventory, and participated in group meetings to share and collaborate on research findings. The results of my research were multi-faceted, with positive and negative results. In essence we found that certain compounds extracted from harmful algae were somewhat beneficial to human health and that further research and development needed to take place.

    In this role I was tasked with isolating and testing new compounds for antimicrobial properties for the elimination and inhibition of pathogenic bacteria growth in human infections. Projects achieved inhibition of pathogenic fungi, E. coli and Staph cultures in multiple studies by isolated fractions of micro-algal extracts. In the isolation of compounds I worked with biological and chemical hazardous wastes and became proficient in the handling, storage, and clean up of hazardous spills in the laboratory. Working in a natural products chemistry laboratory exposed all laboratory personnel to hazardous solvents, chemical derivatives, and neurotoxins. Quick action and response was the key for dealing with accidental exposure and spills of multiple scales.

    I developed and implemented a new laboratory technique that enabled me to label active cellular tissue involved with neurological function. Project was designed to assess the neural networks of pteropod molluscs that are involved in food acquisition and behavioral decisions. I used Epi-Fluorescent, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy techniques to view tissue slices that were marked with biotinylated markers. In the performance of microscopy I was required to handle and work with hazardous chemicals such as Ozmium and am versed with spill cleanup procedures and waste handling protocols.

    I was the first student to introduce Neurophysiology into the laboratory. I single handedly designed an ingenious micro-fluidic system to deliver odor signals to sensory antennae of crayfish at a controlled pulse rate. I performed micro-surgery on live crayfish to expose the brain and olfactory lobe. I implanted 16-channel micro-electrode arrays into the olfactory lobe and recorded ganglion activity to an array of odor pulses introduced to sensory organs. The challenge here was to self teach myself the micro-surgery and artery perfusion of the crayfish head and to learn the art of multiple electrode recording and data analysis. The result of these experiments showed that crayfish were evolutionarily adapted to code for complex signals that are present in their environment (See Box application above for select publications of this work). An additional project involved investigating agricultural run-off and how sub-lethal exposure to herbicides effect essential behaviors in benthic organisms (See Box application above for publication of this work).

    NSF Grant/IGERT Program/BART Fellowship)Biosphere and Atmospheric Chemistry Interactions; I spearheaded research within the areas of atmospheric pollution and its effect on aquatic ecosystems. I designed, built and implemented artificial stream systems with self contained atmospheres to evaluate the effect of ozone pollution on aquatic systems and macro-invertebrates. I architected the ozone project plan to include timelines, budget and resource procurement/allocation. Being proactive and reactive I was able to troubleshoot and utilize creative problem-solving techniques to foster successful project results. I resolved the problem of introducing a highly corrosive gas into streams made of PVC by coating pipes with Teflon film. I collaborated with my project partner to designed Teflon enclosure systems to establish an isolated atmosphere over artificial stream systems and solved the problem of delivery and sampling of ozone gas over water through the use of auto-samplers and programmable valve-pump systems.

I spearheaded an off-site testing location for heavy metal screening using Flame Atomic Absorption techniques that allowed for immediate turn around of samples and testing results for customers. In addition to these tasks I was integral in the wet chemistry analysis of industrial effluent for priority pollutants such as Cyanide, phosphorous, ammonia, nitrates, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) testing using GC/MS. I developed procedures for environmental monitoring of industrial effluent and drinking water samples for E. coli contamination using aseptic technique, performed QA/QC procedures for multiple testing platforms, and was responsible for records maintenance, analytics and reporting of findings.
