Recreation Program Coordinator

Seattle, Wa

In this position I collaborated with school administrators, community-based organizations, and Parks and Recreation employees to provide high quality academic, recreational, and culturally relevant programs for 150-200 'targeted' students per year. My student outreach has been focused on students that have scored less than standard on the SBA (L1/L2). My programs have been through our out of school time programs and in break camp programs (Summer and Mid-Winter break). To run these programs I have recruited and trained instructors and volunteers as well as managing 2 - 3 part time staff for program support. In collaboration with other school support staff (Admin team, counseling team) I have utilized various student data (test scores, truancy data, ethnic background, Free/Reduced lunch status, McKinney-Vento, etc.) and recommendations to connect students to our program resources. For student data management and reporting I have utilized Excel, Tableau, and Hoonuit. At the end of each quarter I have created program reports to summarize student enrollment, academic progress, attendance data, and student testimonials.

Administrative Assistant

Cru

Greater Seattle Area

As the Administrative Assistant I am primarily responsible for keeping our team up to date with contact information of our donors and volunteers, scheduling events, managing registrations for various events, and creating newsletters (Physical and electronic) for our volunteers and our donors. My secondary responsibilities are networking and initiating with potentially new ministry partners by sharing Cru's mission and initiatives. One of my accomplishments in Cru has been streamlining our communication through the introduction of the app, Slack. Since our team communicates heavily between ourselves and ministry partners with multiple ministry and event topics, using Slack has made it easier for us to communicate using "channels" and file sharing in one application. Another accomplishment is being the main coordinator for our "Boxes of Love" Thanksgiving event one year. With close to creating 300 boxes full of Thanksgiving food boxes, I coordinated the shipment of food items, finding the location of the packing party, and facilitating responsibilities for our volunteers.

Recreation Leader

As the Recreation Leader at Asa Mercer Middle School with Seattle Parks and Recreation, my focus was on Out-of-School Time programming and Summer/break camp programs. I created a safe environment for students through shaping student and staff guidelines, managing and following-up on student/staff conflicts, and checking in with students and families during programming. I also supported administratively with after school/Summer program registrations, communicating with parents and instructors, and supporting volunteers as needed. During normal program days, I managed and distributed snacks to each class and supported community based organizations with logistics (space reservations, scheduling, program guidelines, supplies, etc.) for their OST classes. Outside programming, I planned and coordinated cultural family night events, created "weekly highlights" for our stakeholders, and strategized in keeping student attendance and retention. During Summer and break camp programs, I managed academic/enrichment classes with attendance, classroom coordination, and with supply management. In partnership with Seattle Youth Employment Program, I managed five high school interns that helped in classrooms, distributed supplies and snacks, and cleaning classrooms/cafeteria. I also coordinated with Seattle Summer Food program to receive and distribute breakfast and lunch for our students. Lastly, I made sure that communication between instructors and administrators was smooth as possible via walkie talkies, e-mails, and the occasional check-ins.

Paraeducator

Dimmitt Middle School

Greater Seattle Area

One-on-one paraeducator that assists disabled students and assists teachers in different resource classrooms. For the half of the day, I am a one-on-one paraeducator, I make sure that the student that I assist has little to no obstructions towards their education. I communicate with the teachers, physical therapist, and the occupational therapist of the accommodations that needs to be made in the school work. I personally help him with physically challenging task such as being a scribe, getting a laptop for long writing assignments, and getting him to classrooms, nurse's office, ASB office, etc.I also work with teachers in various resource classrooms. I communicate with the teachers so that I am aware of the expectations and the goals of the classroom. I also hear input and give input so that adjustments can be made from week to week. When working with the students, I make sure that students are on task and distractions are at a minimum. I work with small group when necessary and ask questions to the students to make sure that they are understanding the topic. Because positive reinforcement is so important, I give out "Viking Pride" tickets when students demonstrate hard work and improvements. Motivation is a big part to ensure a student's growth not only in their studies but also as a human being. I help students to see the bigger goals and get excited for the students when I see improvements or when they are working hard. Because consistency is key, I encourage students and urge them to work hard on a daily basis.

Interns Coordinator/Student Supervisor (Temporary Summer Position)

Cryout

For this after school program, I organized the hiring process (evaluating the resumes, interviewing, writing the qualifications of the CryOut website) for a summer internship program that implemented a "back to school" community event called "Voices of the Youth." For two weeks in the beginning of the summer, I lead a group of 10 high school students for a leadership development opportunity in partnership with a college organization called Athletes in Action in the inner cities of Los Angeles. During this time the high school students were able to serve in various sites in Los Angeles ranging from serving the homeless in Skid Row to serving in a local after school center. Each night I facilitated a group meeting to evaluate what we had learned from our sites. After Los Angeles, I coordinated assignments and duties for the nine interns for the “Voices of the Youth” event. Some of the assignments were to recruiting local musicians and artists (Professional or students), creating the schedule of the event, and creating roles for the volunteers. The relationships I had with the interns gave me an opportunity to train them on real life job qualities such as getting to work on time, appropriate work appearance, upholding individual work responsibilities, and consequences when not upholding the responsibilities.
