The Shoebox Project for Shelters, supported by Dream, collects and distributes gifts in the form of Shoeboxes to women who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in communities across Canada and the US. Each Shoebox is filled with items valued at $50 that any woman is likely to enjoy, but may not splurge on for herself in difficult times. In our founding year, 2011, we delivered 400 Shoeboxes to residents of four Toronto women's shelters. Through word of mouth and the support of some loyal sponsors, the initiative grew very quickly. Five short years later, in 2016, our network of dedicated volunteers delivered over 36,500 gifts to women in 252 communities. In this role, I organized and equipped volunteers across North America to strategically start Shoebox Project chapters in their communities. For the 3 years I worked in this role, we had a 95% retention of volunteers. I created and regularly updated the national website (www.shoeboxproject.com). An important goal of The Shoebox Project is to inspire companies, employees, and the average person to tangibly make a difference and give back to their community. Other aspects in my role included coordinating marketing and social media support, assisting in scheduling and preparing board materials, and providing general administrative support to the Executive Director.
