As a team leader at R&D department, I succeeded to develop a real-time PCR based molecular diagnostic kit (MDx) to detect and differentiate the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (HSV1/2) This product is intended to diagnose the infection and typing of HSV 1 and/or HSV 2 from female (ano)genital swab. To make this product sale in US, I achieved FDA 510(k) clearance, which is the first MDx product in Korea. During over 2 years to complete it, I had controlled the whole process of the design input, output, review, verification and validation steps in compliance with quality system regulation (QSR). In addition, I was fully charge in writing the reports whenever every step was completed and arranging the collaboration across functional groups (ie. R&D, QC, QA, RA, manufacturing etc.). I also reviewed the QC and manufacturing instruction prior to transferring to corresponding department. And for the clinical validation, I communicated regularly with the contract research organization (CRO) in US about the results of the substantial equivalence. Therefore, I have an experience and knowledge of whole process related with IVD product from the beginning such as the feasibility study to the end as FDA-cleared. Furthermore, I participated in the audit as a R&D representative, and was trained as the internal auditor.Besides, I arranged a Lyophilization project which is an essential technique for the point-of-care (POC) diagnosis and completed the optimization, resulting in the patent application. Overall, I have successfully organized the team, assigning for the members to complete projects on time which were related with business to business project such as a Licensing-out.

I have been focusing on the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) protein, which is now regarded as “the rising star molecule” since deregulation of mTOR signaling is closely related with various disorders including cancer, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, etc. I discovered a novel function of mTOR in protein quality control. My results showed that mTOR directly interacts with actively translating machinery, called polysomes, and regulates the stability of newly synthesized Akt and PKC proteins, which are among the most important molecules for cell signaling. My findings imply that cotranslational functions of mTOR complex 2 can be targeted for cancer and other diseases (e.g. neurodegenerative and age-related disorders) caused by protein misprocessing. My work was published to EMBO Journal in 2010 and highlighted in the “Signaling breakthrough of the year in 2010” as well as noted as an “Editor’s Choice” by Science Signaling (Vol.4, Issue 154), which is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition, Faculty of 1000 (f1000.com), a website with post-publication peer reviews, evaluated our article and rated it 11 points, which means “exceptional” higher than “must read”.
