About Nancy Wood

A few years ago I watched Adam Grant’s TED Talk, “Are you a giver or a taker?”. It was at that point I realized there was a word for the way I approached work and life. I’m a giver. Helping others achieve their goals brings me so much joy - I succeed when others succeed. This mindset helps me approach my work in People Operations. My goal is to create systems, procedures, and policies that enable people to be successful at work. My professional career started in event planning and that instilled in me the importance of experience. After that, I attended law school where I really learned to “show my work”. I’m driven to understand varying perspectives, consider things from all angles, and share information proactively. Bringing these experiences to my work in people operations, I strive to build things that not only function as intended, but are also enjoyable to interact with.Through all of my professional pivots, I’ve been faced with new challenges, and have not been afraid to take them on. I’ve learned how to use the resources I have access to to quickly come up to speed and find good solutions, and how to be more flexible and adaptable. I’m a real utility player, filling in any gaps a team may have. In addition to all of this, I’ve spent the last 10+ years working remotely and have become a huge proponent of flexible work arrangements, remote work, and the social and learning benefits of coworking with individuals outside of your company. I look forward to a future where this is more commonplace and both employers and employees are able to reap the benefits.

About StartupExperts: StartupExperts is an invite-only community of experienced HR, Finance, Talent, and Ops leaders who understand that while we tend to be “teams of one” or leaders of small teams at individual companies, we all regularly encounter the same business challenges and believe that collectively we are stronger when we support each other. • Binc
Director Of Training And Recruiting Operations
    Binc Feb 2017 - Mar 2020
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
In my role as the Director of Training and Project Operations, I oversaw a number of programs at the company. Within the world of training, we run programs including ... - New Hire Orientation: a two-week program designed to introduce recruiters of all levels to the company, our systems, and recruiting as a whole. 12+ sessions per year- Advanced Recruiter Training (ART) Series: a monthly program of rotating advanced topics related to recruiting and consulting. Topics have included advanced Boolean searching, personalizing candidate messages, giving feedback, and time management.- Foundational & Ongoing Manager Trainings: a three day training for new managers covering internal business practices and foundational management concepts, followed by monthly topics including managing difficult conversations, coaching, managing escalations, etc. - Learning Stipend: an open stipend for Bincers to "choose their own learning adventure" supporting individual development as needed.
  • Binc
    Operations Manager
    Binc Feb 2016 - Jan 2017
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
During this time, I oversaw the development and iteration of our new hire training program. What was originally a very informal program mostly consisting of "follow this person around for a few days" became a 1-2 week program of classroom sessions, role plays, and live practice. We focused on many areas including company culture and processes, industry information, and recruiting fundamentals. It was designed for both individuals new to recruiting and people who have been recruiting for years and need a refresh. A version of this program still exists today and continues to be built upon for all new Bincers that join. In late 2016, I also inherited the data function within the company and worked to maintain our SQL database, Zapier integrations, and the entire workflow of recruiting/pipelines information. I partnered with a few consultants over the years for items outside of my abilities.
  • Binc
    Pm Manager
    Binc Aug 2014 - Jan 2016
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
As the company moved into a new phase of growth there was a need for more standardization across projects. I continued administering our ATS, but also built out an internal knowledge management system in Bloomfire. I also began serving as the administrator for a number of internal tools including Slack, Officevibe, LinkedIn Recruiter among other things.
  • Binc
    Research Manager
    Binc Sep 2011 - Jul 2014
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
I joined Binc as one of the first researchers/sourcers and built a team of 4 additional researchers/sourcers that supported all of the client projects across the company. We built market maps, maintained the candidate database, and built candidate lists for our full cycle recruiters. In the early days we developed a scoring system to quickly process applicants for roles so we could keep up with the volume.During this time, I also served as the administrator of our Bullhorn ATS and optimized the workflow for recruiters and sourcers. In late 2013, I led the migration from Bullhorn to CATS and identified a loophole in our Bullhorn contract that saved considerable money for the company. The CATS workflow also included designing and building out a custom Google Sheet for each project with Zapier automation. This setup allowed for better reporting and analysis for our projects.
