About Patty Bates-Ballard

Patty Bates-Ballard is a speaker, mediator, educator, and writer who helps teams communicate effectively across differences. Author of the books ACE-ing Conflict, Judgment or Joy, and Navigating Diversity, she is CEO of WordSmooth and developer of the Harvest Respect program. Patty supports school districts, police departments, corporations, governmental agencies, and nonprofit organizations to communicate effectively across differences so they can better fulfill their missions. She honed her ACE-ing Conflict system over her 25+ years of leading Harvest Respect learning sessions, community dialogues, community mediations, and a series of court-ordered learning sessions conducted for a member of the Aryan Nations. Patty also is a skilled grant writer, specializing in outcomes and inclusive storytelling.A volunteer for the African American Museum of Dallas and Dallas CORE and a member of National Association for Community Mediation, Patty received BA degrees in Psychology and Philosophy/Religion from Austin College. She is the mother of two sons, Kory and Kaden, who inspire her daily.Patty formed WordSmooth so she could work from home and take care of Kory when he was born with disabilities. Her book Judgment Or Joy? 33 Ways My Son Taught Me to Stop Judging, Love Myself, and Embrace Connection is a collection of vignettes from Kory’s life that offer recipes for finding joy through releasing judgment of ourselves and each other.
