Multi-Story Water is a community-focused arts research project, celebrating the waterways in the Shipley area - the River Aire, Bradford Beck and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. It explores local people's connections with the water environment - the pleasure water brings, the memories it holds, the risks it poses and our responsibilities for it. A range of issues from flooding to local heritage have been explored through conversations with and among local communities and then translated into creative forms including theatre, film, visual art, walking tours etc. The project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. My involvement with the project began in a voluntary capacity as a resident of the Higher Coach Road estate. After turning my hand to a number of projects (including setting up an outdoor art group for local children) I was recruited as a consultant. My role includes planning events that allow communities to come together and establish lasting links and conversations. My priority is to empower residents to make positive changes in their area. My experience of networking, events management and organising high-level visits at the embassy has proved a real asset in this new role.
