As a special projects reporter for Frontline's digital team I produced both quick-turnaround and longform investigations, turned data into narratives, and told compelling stories in print, film and interactive storytelling. I have covered a multiplicity of beats in my career and consider myself a generalist, but in recent years my reporting has focused on.

Santiago, Chile And New York, N.Y.

• Between 2011 and 2014, I lived in Santiago, Chile writing science, politics and business stories for national publications. I continued to freelance from the U.S. through 2015. My work frequently appeared in Scientific.
• An enterprise story I wrote for Scientific American revealed how petty rivalries among astronomers have stymied the construction of the largest optical telescopes on earth. It was included in the Best American Science.
• In early 2009, with the nation’s economy and morale zipped into a downward double helix, President Obama propelled a major spending package through the U.S. Congress. Roughly $15 billion of it went to science. Four.
• While in South America, I embarked on a 2,000-km solo bike trip through the Patagonia region of Argentina and Chile, freelancing stories along the way. One, published by Vice Motherboard, described the painstaking work.

San Francisco Bay Area

• I covered San Francisco and the Peninsula on various beats for the Examiner’s spunky, high-octane newsroom. I earned a reputation as an adroit generalist and a digger. My love of spreadsheets made my desk a landing pad.
• After a 30-inch gas pipeline exploded in San Bruno, killing eight, I mined state utility filings and built my first database. It revealed that the utility company had collected $177 million from ratepayers for pipeline.
• One FOIA-based quick-turnaround investigation exposed that 52 city bus drivers lacked driver’s licenses. Thanks to the story, dozens were suspended, some fired.
• Another revealed the public hospital was routinely hospitalizing poor patients because it hadn’t expanded its outpatient dialysis unit in decades; this story won a San Francisco Peninsula Press Club Award for news.

Hagatna, Guam

I covered politics, environment, development and -- eventually -- special projects at this Gannett-owned daily paper in the U.S. territory of Guam, where complex relationships between locals, immigrants and the U.S. military made for fascinating stories. My reporting took me to aircraft carriers, typhoon-struck atolls, and to federal courtrooms. I won.

New York, New York

I investigated the city’s electoral politics after Sept. 11 as an intern under legendary columnist Wayne Barrett, wrote immigration, health and education stories for editor Thulani Davis, and spent hundreds of hours in courts and libraries doing research for Pulitzer finalist and New Yorker writer Jennifer Gonnerman’s book “Life on the Outside” about drug.
