With the National Growth Fund the Dutch government will earmark € 20 billion over the next five years for project investments in three fields which have the highest potential for structural and durable economic growth: knowledge development, research & development and infrastructure. My role is to support the independent advisory committee by analyzing and assessing investment projects in close collaboration with various stakeholders and experts.

PNO supports large sized companies, SMEs, universities, research institutes, associations and clusters in the full cycle of the innovation process. As a consultant I worked on full-service public service funding and/or innovation management, with a clear focus on recruiting and executing assignments for existing/future customers. The emphasis was on independently exploring the possibilities to start new innovation projects. This required a solid commercial attitude in/when approaching small, medium- to large-sized companies, being responsible for negotiating and concluding contracts. Accordingly, planning, organizing and coordinating skills are necessary to independently drafting and submitting qualitative subsidy applications.Activities and services provided:- Developing and executing regional, national and EU collaborative innovation projects- Procuring public grants for innovation projects and set-up grant strategies- Defining and roadmapping of innovation strategies with the use of innovation intelligence tools

In this capacity I brought together my technical and managerial skills to ensure the optical microscopy laboratories ran safely and efficiently. I was responsible for inventory, maintenance and budget. I was also engaged in equipment instructions and training of staff members (PhDs, Postdocs and students), by mentoring, coaching and disciplining lab users to follow regulations, work safe and clean, in order to maintain security standards. Because of the poor lab state, I devised and implemented several improvement proposals w.r.t. relevant laboratory aspects, student and personnel-related matters that were substandard.

Research topic: Bitumen ageing - Studying the ageing relations of an adjusted artificial ageing protocolBitumen plays a crucial role in the quality of porous asphalt concrete roads. Changes in its cohesive and adhesive properties deteriorate its structural integrity and increase its sensitivity to cracks and ravelling. The main objective was to investigate bitumen ageing kinetics on the basis of physicochemical changes and quantifying the individual contributions of the ageing mechanisms. Because current artificial ageing methods proved to be insufficient in simulating long-term field ageing, new artificial ageing protocols were developed in an attempt to reproduce field ageing relations. Extra achievements: - Building an exclusive and customized pressure ageing vessel- Publication: Coauthor of the Chemo-mechanics of ageing of bituminous binder as part of the project IQ - Ageing of Asphalt pavements.

Research thesis: Quantifying the role of hardness contrast in edge ductilityExtra achievements:- Voluntary prolongation of my internship to finish an ambitious research plan that consisted of several parallel processes in order to identify and quantify the role of hardness contrast in edge ductility of DP800 steel. These parallel process consisted of building a macro and micro model with nonlinear finite elements analysis software MSC MARC and VORONOI respectively. The macro simulation of a shearing process of DP800 steel blanks was developed to determine the cut edge local strains. The micro model (RVE) consisted of a carefully constructed representation of the microstrucure of DP800 steel by making use of EBSD-data and VORONOI (in-house) software. The final step was the implementation of both the local strains and the geometrical data into DAMASK (advanced material simulation kit) to derive a model that was able to investigate local and global microstructural behaviour i.e. the influence of hardness contrast. - Contribution to the further development of the VORONOI software by always pushing the limits of the program.
