As Professor Carbon Cycling and Atmospheric Composition I work on basic research that underlies some of the most pressing challenges of society today. As member of the Netherlands Climate Science Council I contribute to independent science based policy advice to our government.Spread over two universities (Groningen and Wageningen) I lead a group of about ten scientists that are paid from competitive research grants funded by the European Union, the National Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, and others. Many of these grants have a very international character and I collaborate with people in the US, China, Brazil, and many European countries.My group uses cutting-edge numerical models that run on supercomputers around the world to understand measurement in our atmosphere. This includes measurements of carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and many other gases and their isotopes. A substantial part of my job consists of educating new generations of students and scientists, for instance by providing courses at university such as "Earth System Modeling", and "Atmospheric Composition and Air Quality".
