About Wouter Bulten

Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool that can assist us in the many challenges we face. In my work, I employ AI to improve healthcare, specifically in the field of (computational) pathology and cancer diagnostics. My research has shown that AI can not only perform at the level of experts but that it can also support pathologists in their diagnostic process.I have a strong background in artificial intelligence, software engineering, research, and medical imaging. Before starting my career in (computational) pathology, I worked as a (backend) software engineer and data scientist.

    Using artificial intelligence, and specifically deep learning, for improved diagnostics in prostate cancer. In my PhD, we showed that a deep learning algorithm could grade prostate biopsies at the level of experienced pathologists, which was published in The Lancet Oncology. As a follow-up we showed that AI can indeed support pathologists when diagnosing prostate cancer, and that there exists something as a pathologist-AI synergy.
