Many professional sports as cycling, ice skating and bobsleigh involve high speed. In these sports, races are regularly won by fractions of a second. The aerodynamic drag acting on the athletes and their vehicle is often the main force the athletes have to overcome. A small reduction of the aerodynamic drag can mark the difference between winning and losing a competition.Nowadays numerical simulations and wind tunnel measurements are conducted to optimize the athlete’s posture, equipment shape and materials for aerodynamic drag minimization. Due to the complexity of the flow, the accuracy of numerical simulations is often questionable and model validation via experimental data is typically required. Wind tunnel tests usually involve pressure and force measurements, which give little information of the flow features responsible of the aerodynamic drag. Furthermore, the tests are typically conducted on steady models, which do not represent the actual athlete’s motion during the race.We work on the development of a new measurement system, the Ring of Fire, that solves these limitations. We will apply the technique of tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (tomo-PIV) to make it possible to visualize and quantify the 3D flow field around the athlete in motion and measure the aerodynamic forces acting on it. This is realized by injecting an air flow with small particles and imaging these with cameras.The Ring of Fire does not require the use of a windtunnel and can therefore be used at the training ground of the athlete, for example a velodrome or an ice rink. An athlete can cycle or skate through the measurement setup during which all aerodynamic information is collected.
