I have been practicing tax and business law in Grand Rapids since 1983. My wife – who has a successful family law practice – and I have raised our family in Grand Rapids, and we are active members of our community. My entire legal career has been in Grand Rapids, and I anticipate spending the rest of my legal career here, as well. Most clients are looking for lawyers who can help develop practical solutions to their business and legal problems. I make a commitment to understanding the various, underlying business problems my clients face, and then use my legal, problem solving, consensus-building and counseling skills to help them develop practical solutions. This is a fundamental component of the philosophy I use to practice law. I represent family businesses and business entrepreneurs on a ‘cradle-to-grave’ basis. I form business entities and then help them solve their problems along the way, such as dealing with employment, contract, real estate, tax and regulatory issues. I also help clients develop the business systems needed to make a business run smoothly. I draft buy and sell agreements, form agreements between shareholders and create agreements for the sale and purchase of businesses. These matters are milestone events for any business, and a successful business lawyer needs to be adept at dealing with all of them.As a result of our extensive work together, I develop close, personal relationships with my clients. This often leads to estate planning and estate tax planning using wills, trusts and other related documents.
