WILLIAM POLK CHESHIRE Jr., M.D., is a neurologist specializing in disorders of the autonomic nervous system. His clinical practice at the Mayo Clinic in Florida is part of a culture of team medicine in which the needs of the patient come first. As an autonomic neurologist, Dr. Cheshire is a past president of the American Autonomic Society and a past chair of the Autonomic Disorders Section of the American Academy of Neurology. He is an associate editor of Clinical Autonomic Research, specialty chief editor for Frontiers Neurology Autonomic Disorders, a member of the editorial board of Autonomic Neuroscience as well as a guest editor for its theme issue on Salt and the Autonomic Nervous System. As a neuroethicist, Dr. Cheshire is associate director of the Program in Professionalism & Values at Mayo Clinic and past chair of the Medical Ethics Committee at Mayo Clinic in Florida. At the national level he is past chair of the American Academy of Neurology's Grievance Committee, which addresses allegations of professional misconduct among neurologists. He is also a past president of the staff of Mayo Clinic in Florida.Dr. Cheshire is author of more than 170 peer-reviewed papers in neurology, autonomic medicine, and neuroethics. In 2019, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations honored him as Educator of the Year.He received his A.B. in biochemical sciences from Princeton University, his M.A. in bioethics from Trinity International University, and his M.D. from West Virginia University. He completed his neurology residency and pain fellowship at the University of North Carolina. He is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in autonomic disorders by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties.
