My view on digital transformation and technology initiatives comes from multiple vantage points. At companies of all sizes, I’ve seen how technology can enable people to do their jobs better, faster and with a higher degree of satisfaction and engagement. I’ve had the perspective of an entrepreneur building companies. Startups aren’t usually in a position to buy everything they want or build every solution to their exact specs. They have to make choices and focus on essential tools for product development. As a CTO, the goal is to deliver what’s needed while ensuring solutions can be built on as the company grows. The right mix of technology and capabilities can allow the founders and early employees to realize their vision.I’ve also been on the other end of the spectrum – large, established companies with less bootstrapping and (perhaps) more budget. They have a different challenge that comes with transforming legacy systems and undoing the sprawl accumulated after decades of technology add-ons. In that environment, the goal is to organize and consolidate the sprawl, ultimately identifying the optimal combination of new and existing solutions. Again, technology equips people to deliver on the vision.Generative AI, workflow automation, self-service frameworks, hyper-personalization, large language models – these are all tools in the tech stack, alongside many others. Is one better or more important than another? Maybe. It depends on your company, your goals, your resources, your appetite for risk and your industry. Whatever the landscape or stage of growth, you have to continue to evolve and iterate and stay on top of things. My work supports my fundamental belief that technology should make people’s lives better. Otherwise, what’s the point?
