I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Alabama. I examine how individual and situational factors influence criminal decision-making using novel virtual reality methodologies in a sample of individuals that are incarcerated. My research interests include: race and crime, perceptual deterrence, situational crime prevention, offender-based research, program evaluation, reentry, gun violence, and using novel methodology such as VR.

My current project examines how individual and situational factors influence criminal decision-making in the context of burglary. Specifically, using novel virtual reality methodologies in a sample of incarcerated offenders I examine how environmental cues that signal risk (e.g., an alarm system) or reward (e.g., an expensive car in the driveway) influence target selection at the house and neighborhood level. -

Program EvaluatorCambridge Hub, Impact Labs Jan 2019 - Apr 2019Cambridge, United KingdomI led a team of four PhD candidates through a program evaluation ofa charity in Cambridge, UK that works with at-risk youth. The primary goal was to assess how the program positively influenced the lives of at-risk youth to promote educational and employment attainment, as well as overall positive development. Collectively, we proposed an intricate solution for the charity which included the development of a Theory of Change, a structured literature review, a Gap-Analysis, and per the results - a proposed research plan. We wrote a report and presented our recommendations to the charity in an open format setting that allowed for clarification and feedback, ensuring a clear delivery and satisfied client. The final report is available on request. The report is continously used to obtain external funding for the charity to continute serving its community. I, along one with a other team member, conducted two concept mapping sessions with charity employees to determine the overall methodology and goal(s) of the program. This information guided the literature review and was utilized to develop a Theory of Change. Informed by the concept mapping sessions, I conducted an online survey with members of the organization to determine the perceived overall importance of each methodology or goal. I conducted a gap-analysis to determine if the current program was supported by existing theory and empirical examinations of similar programs. Per the results of the gap-analysis, I worked collectively with other team members to determine a study recommendation. Once a study recommendation was determined, I helped other team members critically research empirically and theoretically founded measurements for each outcome of interest, and myself investigated appropriate research procedures that aligned with resource availability. I wrote a report regarding survey design and analysis and the Gap-analysis, and edited the final full report to ensure it read as coming from one voice.
