A privately owned entity specialising in shop fitting and joinery manufacturing AWG’s core proposition was as a supplier of store design and construction services to the retail industry. As a brand AWG is most recognisable by their body of work representing organisations such as Darrell Lea Chocolate Shops, Vodafone, Dick Smith Electronics, Mimco, BNT and Sanity among their list of clients.

The Darrell Lea distribution model encompassed 1900 independent resellers and 40 retail / distribution franchises nationally with a combined turnover of 36 million. The reseller network was made up of a combination of independent retail outlets and large key account relationships included representation in pharmacy, newsagents, duty free, petrol & convenience, gift stores and independent grocery. As National Sales Manager I was responsible for formulating the sales and marketing strategy for the channel and managing the sales team that supported it. Turnover for the division exceeded $36 million in 2009.

The Victorian division of Darrell Lea consisted on twenty company owned stores, nine regional franchises and forty eight third party resellers. My role in the organisation required strategic and operational responsibility for each of the reporting entities. Combined the sales divisions generated $17 million in annual sales and was supported by a team that consisted of two business development managers, a visual merchandise team, and a licensee manager.

As Australia’s leading 1 Hour Photo outlet Rabbit Photo at its peak was represented in over 250 major shopping centres around Australia. Initially a wholesale supplier of photographic processing to the pharmacy and newsagency industry, Rabbit Photo embarked on implementing a serious retail strategy in 1989. I joined Rabbit Photo in 1986 as a darkroom technician, as the business evolved and opportunities presented I chose to embrace the opportunity to branch out into the retail environment. Commencing as a retail assistant within a few months I was afforded the opportunity to run my own store. My career progressed in what might be considered as a traditional merchant’s path via sequence of higher grade stores, cluster management, middle management culminating in my appointment as Victorian State Manager responsible for 42 stores with sales in excess of $22 million annually.
