Clayton Bradshaw-Mittal (they/them) is a queer, previously unhoused veteran who writes queer, working-class fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Their work has won the Plaza Short Story Prize; been an Honorable Mention for The Masters Review Short Story Award for New Writers; been a finalist for the Iron Horse Literary Review/Texas Tech University Press First Book Prize, the Press 53 Award for Short Fiction, the Kinder-Crump Award for Short Fiction at Pleiades, and the Saints + Sinners LGBTQ Short Fiction Prize; and longlisted for the W.S. Porter Prize at Regal House Publishing. Bradshaw-Mittal is an alum of the Tin House Winter workshop and the Vermont Studio Center, holds a BA in English with a minor in Creative Writing from Sam Houston State University, received an MFA in Fiction from Texas State University, and earned their PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Mississippi. They will receive a General Fellowship to attend a MASS MoCA residency in December 2024.While working on their MFA and PhD, Bradshaw-Mittal was a teaching artist and curriculum developer for Art Spark Texas and Down South Word of Mouth, working with disabled and incarcerated veterans to write fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. They received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the Burdine Johnson Foundation to develop programs and curricula that assisted veterans through creative approaches to rehabilitative processes and with modes of creative expression.Their fiction, nonfiction, and poetry can be found in Story; Fairy Tale Review; F(r)iction; South Carolina Review; Consequence Forum; Lost Pilots; War, Literature, and the Arts; and other places. Their book reviews appear in the Rumpus, Barrelhouse, and elsewhere.Bradshaw-Mittal is querying a magical-realist story collection titled SOFT GOODBYES THROUGH BROKEN VEILS. The collection was a finalist for the Iron Horse Literary Review/ Texas Tech University Press First Book Prize, the W.S. Porter Prize at Regal House Publishing, and the Press 53 Award for Short Fiction.They are also developing a speculative novel following nonbinary teenager in an educational setting of the not-so-distant future.Originally from Texas, Clayton Bradshaw-Mittal now lives in Erie, PA, while teaching Creative Writing at Gannon University.
