About Wayne Lester

As a child, Wayne Lester has been intrigued by the worlds beyond our own and what knowledge lies dormant within them. This passion for discovery and exploration lead Wayne to his career in Space Systems Engineering. In high school, joining, and later leading his FIRST Robotics team was what allowed him to get his start in engineering. One of his goals was to design, build, test, and integrate, a beam climbing mini-robot as a deployable payload from a host robot. Wayne received his Bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering and Master's in Space Systems Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2017 and 2018, respectively. In his time at U of M, through internships, leadership roles, and mentorship opportunities, he molded himself to be an effective and innovative team player. Afterwards, he became a Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin in space defense. There he was a flight controller and later an orbit analyst for space-based assets.Currently, Wayne is a Space Systems Engineer at Northrop Grumman in the requirements, verification, interfaces, and test area. He leads a moderate-size team of engineers focused on architecting the requirements for the first commercial Space Station around Earth. Wayne also volunteers his time in organizations, such as the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and Northrop Grumman's African American Task Group (AATG), whose goals are to increase the representation of Black people in STEM fields.
