My research focussed on characterising nanomaterials, in particular the 2D material graphene. I developed software to automate the task of detecting atoms in images. This involved image processing, image segmentation, peak detection and histogram analysis. I wrote Bash scripts to create a high-throughput distributed system for performing quantum-mechanical simulations. Other aspects involved analysing multi-dimensional spectroscopic data through techniques common to signal processing, such as principle component analysis. During my PhD I developed strong presentation skills, winning the 2nd place presentation prize at the NowNANO conference in June 2013.

Responsible for the welfare and safety of students, helping them to settle in to university and providing support when needed. I managed medical emergencies, negotiated in disputes between residents and developed a good rapport with students. My friendly and approachable attitude was key to my success in this position.

Led a team of students from three leading universities in organising a successful multidisciplinary academic conference with over a hundred guests. This involved working within a team, writing a successful proposal for funding (over £3000), managing and delegating sub-teams, and ensuring the smooth running of the conference.

Explained and demonstrated nanotechnology to the general public, whose ages ranged from 5 to 75. I communicated highly technical ideas to a non-specialist audience in a clear and understandable manner.

Responsibilities included:- Researching clustering algorithms for data analysis, including implementing an algorithm based on random walks.- Working with other developers (including pair programming).- Installing & documenting a voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephony system.- Developing graphing and rendering code in Java.
